Summary/Abstract: The alternate history novel is a young genre which consist of the novels about alternative histories—the ideas of what could happen and how the world might look like if something occurred in the past differently than it did in our reality. In the first part of the paper, I will focus on the theory, presenting the genre’s definition(s), its history, name (as it is being called differently among the scholars) and the problems with drawing a line between alternate historical novel and related, similar genres. The second part will be focused on Polish literature and the specificity of Polish novels among their western genre prototypes.
