- Keywords:bestiary; Fysiologus; Christianity; Tania Malyarchuk; postmodernism;
- Summary/Abstract:The bestiary as a genre originated in the Late Antiquity, when a Greek anonymous work called Fysiologus was written. Not only it described animals (both real and mythical), plants and stones, but it also ascribed them their symbolical meaning, which is interpreted using the Bible. Medieval bestiaries have been attractive thanks to their inspirational fantasies and powerful metaphors until today. They relate the appearance and character of various creatures to the life of a Christian, teaching him to live properly. The present study is dedicated to the collection of short prose Zviroslov (2009) by Tania Malyarchuk. It analyses this book from the point of view of the typology and history of a bestiary as a genre. In its second part, the study focuses on the poetics of the Zviroslov and on the possibilities of this genre to describe our society.

- Keywords:literary theory; regional comparative literature; post-Yugoslav literary field; post-socialism; post-communism; transition; Comparative study of Yugoslav literature;
- Summary/Abstract:This paper aims to reconsider methodological and theoretical model for comparative studies into regional post-Yugoslav literatures. It thematises the historic case of conference proceedings Komparativno proučavanje jugoslavenskih književnosti (1983, 1987, 1988, 1991; Zagreb–Varaždin). Aforementioned attempt to establish scientific organization in form of conferences and proceedings has not brought major disciplinary consequences, i.e. a methodological and theoretical model that would be useful for today’s post-Yugoslav (regional) comparative literary research. National literatures are not immutable cultural and historical formations, but it is a dynamic system of relations in the international context. This paper questions a formation of post-Yugoslav (regional) comparative literary research after the period of national emancipations and in the transition through the age of global mobility.

- Subject(s):Studies of Literature, Novel, Slovenian Literature
- Page Range:41-52
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:Drago Jančar; historical novel; Galiot; Katarina; the Peacock; and the Jesuit;
- Summary/Abstract:The paper is devoted to the topic of the historical novel in Drago Jančarʼs novels which enjoys great popularity in Slovenian literature. Although Jančar can not be described as a typical author of historical novels there appear some features of this genre in his novels. Specifically, it could be seen primarily in his novels Galiot (Galjot) and Katarina, the Peacock, and the Jesuit (Katarina, pav in jezuit) in which the author, on the background of real as well as fictitious historical events, deals with the issue of an effect of an inevitable historical development on a fate of individuals, with the question of human freedom and of a conflict between the individual and society.

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Photography, Visual Arts, Studies of Literature, Polish Literature, History of Art
- Page Range:53-63
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:ekphrasis; apocryphon; Jacek Dehnel; painting; photography;
- Summary/Abstract:The paper concerns peculiar literary genre—ekphrasis (a literary description of work of art). Basing on selected (prose and poetic) texts by Polish writer Jacek Dehnel, which involve photography and painting, I am trying to examine if (and to what extent) the category of apocryphon may be adapted for research on ekphrasis. The category of apocryphon describes not only texts which supplement The Bible or literary mystifications, but also (prototypically) literary works in which “so-called modern realities are left more or less intact” (D. Szajnert’s suggestion) and which are filling up or amplifying narrations from works of fiction considered as canonical (e.g. short stories from Karel Čapek’s Kniha apokryfů).

- Author(s):Mateusz Grabowski
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Studies of Literature, Polish Literature, Theory of Literature
- Page Range:65-73
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:modern lyric; Norwid; poetics; romanticism; Polish literature;
- Summary/Abstract:The volume of Vade-mecum is one of the most important accomplishments not only of Polish but also European Romanticism. Joseph Brodsky—the illustrious poet and Nobel Prize winner—said that Norwid’s opus magnum is far more notable than Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du mal, and it is proposing the new paradigm of modern lyric. In the introduction to the first German edition of Vade-mecum Hans Robert Jauss noticed that Norwid’s poetics is innovative and precursory. In planned paper I am going to define what exactly modern lyric is—the genre or phenomenon which is not standard for simple definition (studies of Jonathan Culler and Hans Robert Jauss)? The answer to this question will give the opportunity to outline a broad horizon for research on Norwid’s poetics.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the paper is to approach the literary genre of the novel for women and its necessary modification in its application on Slovak socio-historical conditions of the 19th century. We attempt to legitimize the novel Sirota Podhradských as a specific and valuable contribution to Slovak literature from the socio-historical perspective as well as the genological perspective by the analysis of the text and by emphasizing the personal profile of the author. In this way it is also very important to highlight the Vansováʼs chosen strategy in her first novel Sirota Podhradských and also to clarify what goals the author followed with her strategy.

- Page Range:93-101
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:remake; plays; new genre; dramaturgy; “derivative” works;
- Summary/Abstract:This paper discusses the phenomenon of the literary remake, which was mainly touched by the Russian literature in the recent years. The vast majority of this type of literary work provokes paying closer attention not only to the reasons but also to the consequences of this phenomenon. The researchers have been having a sceptical approach towards remakes, and even if they do mention remakes among the border genres, seldom do they find them worthy a more thorough study. Concerning the dramaturgy as such, the remake-plays characteristics are listed (in which the signals of the new literary genre are noticeable), the differences between the remake and the rest of the literary genres, and last but not least the doubtful aspects of the remake as a literary genre. Finally, I will try to answer the question if it is possible to accept the remake as a real new genre of the Russian dramaturgy

- Author(s):Martin Markoš
- Language:Czech
- Subject(s):Studies of Literature, Czech Literature, Family and social welfare, Drama
- Page Range:103-111
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:drama; family; relationships; cohabitation; sexual identity;
- Summary/Abstract:The present paper deals with the contemporary Czech drama (plays written after 2000) in terms of thematization of forms of contemporary family, possibilities of partnership and of violation of the borders between these forms. At the same time, it is focused on anxiety of uncertainty which have been brought by these transformations. Methodically, the paper is based on the sociological studies by Manuel Castells, Anthony Giddens and Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of liquid modernity. The paper tries, in connection with this concept, to verify the hypothesis that uncertainty can lead to adhering to a tradition pathologically, ignoring disruption of comprehension and loss of freedom.

- Language:Serbian
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics, Studies of Literature, Phenomenology
- Page Range:113-123
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:fairy tale; (over)interpretation; problematical approach to the literary text; new reading; theories of interpretation; theory of reception; phenomenology;
- Summary/Abstract:Oral tales are created to be alive and changeable. Until they get written down. The narrator inserted culturological norms of the collective awareness into the fairy tale. The distancing awareness of the modern reader, not listener, does not imply the same contents and layers as normative, therefore reading in modern time requires problematization and deconstruction of the implied contents and norms. The question we try to answer in this paper is whether that problematization is relevant for interpretation of the text or just for dynamic, culturologically determined reception of a modern reader. Is reading and interpreting based on the genre the only correct way, or is it possible to read in new ways that open new horizons for old role of the fairy tales?

- Author(s):Matúš Mikšík
- Language:Slovak
- Subject(s):Studies of Literature, Slovak Literature
- Page Range:125-133
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:Štefan Strážay; elegy; interpretation of a poem; Slovak poetry;
- Summary/Abstract:In my paper I focus on selected poems of Štefan Strážay, which are analysed in regard to their (a)typical relations with the genre of elegy. First I outline the theoretical basis of the paper while stating that the main idea on which a classical elegy is formed I consider to be the verbalization of the feeling of loss through a lyrical form. Then I consider the way in which this moment is reflected in the poems of Štefan Strážay—I consider his work to be heavily influenced by elegy. Out of the whole collection of Strážay’s poems in my paper I focus on poem Elégia (Elegy) from collection of poems Igram (the name of Strážay’s home village, 1975), poem Za riekou (Beyond the river) from Malinovského 96 (the address on which Strážay lived in Bratislava, 1985) and two fragments of Zápisník (Notepad) from collection Elégia (Elegy, 1989). The aim of the paper is to comment on how the genre of elegy and its components are reflected upon in the work of one of the most important Slovak poets of the second half of 20th century, Štefan Strážay.

- Keywords:historical novel; poetics; surroundings; comparison; depicting of the moment;
- Summary/Abstract:In the present study we focus on the concept of the historical novel from the point of view of its poetics in two selected works from British and Czech literature. We deal with this genre type in the context of two perspectives: literary morphology and research of surroundings in these two texts. The main point of the study is an analysis, on one side, of the historical novel as the first work and, on the other hand, already famous historical novel in the true sense of the word. The research is based on a comparison of both texts and partially on the genre methodology. The relevant part is the concept of narrative strategy of the work from the aspect of the author. Another significant component is also depicting of the atmosphere and the capturing of the contemporary moment. A part of the article deals with a historiosophical element.

- Language:Slovak
- Subject(s):Studies of Literature, Polish Literature, Pre-WW I & WW I (1900 -1919), Interwar Period (1920 - 1939), WW II and following years (1940 - 1949)
- Page Range:201-208
- No. of Pages:8
- Keywords:Zbigniew Herbert; world war; elegy; irony; pathos;
- Summary/Abstract:An elegy as a lyrical genre has remained in various genre modifications from ancient times to the present day. In Polish literature, there were renaissance poets who followed in the tradition of Roman elegy. Among them, there is Jan Kochanowski, whose work is in this respect considered the canon of mourning poetry. Post-war Polish poets return to the elegy. Thus they follow in Jan Kochanowski’s tradition, and on the base of some individual creative methods, they also transform this genre into the genre form that meets the criteria of modern poetry. The article is dedicated to Zbigniew Herbert’s poems of the elegiac mood. Elegiac tones in the verse of this Polish poet are evident since the beginning of his work, and their intensity increases up to the last author’s collections in which the tones gain an intimate autobiographical character of bidding farewell to all the beauty and things of this world.

- Language:Russian
- Subject(s):Studies of Literature, Health and medicine and law, Theory of Literature
- Page Range:209-218
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:narratology; literary genesis; corporality in fiction literature; thanatopoetics; medical prose;
- Summary/Abstract:The paper aims to examine a sociocultural situation that influenced the creation of a medical story-genre. The genre includes fictional works with a situation of a medical treatment. The characters of these stories are a physician and a patient. One or both of them think about illness, death or health, and they turn local subjects into philosophical reflection. Illness or death do not act as a simple shocking feature, but expand new narrative, poetic and thematic horizons. The medical context in fiction enriches and modifies themes, basic fictional situations and narratives. The paper focuses on the poetic features and influence of the works of 19th–20th century (works of Chekhov, Bulgakow, etc.) on the modern prose of writers-physicians. It highlights the landmarks of a genre genesis and points out the specific writers’ implications and the intertextual connections.

- Author(s):Anna Stetsenko
- Language:Czech
- Subject(s):Music, Studies of Literature, Russian Literature, Drama
- Page Range:219-226
- No. of Pages:8
- Keywords:opera; opera text; libretto; librettology; librettistics; opera studies; music drama; semiotics; genre; vocal music;
- Summary/Abstract:Opera Libretto is situated on the border of literature and music. Its controversial status is the reason of the insufficient attention paid to this genre from Philology and Musicology sciences. Another reason of the lack of studies of the genre in the academic environment is its (pseudo) invariability that can be explained by the traditional perception of the libretto as a secondary element of the music theatre. Russian librettist Yury Dimtrin is trying to change this point of view, primarily with his own experiments that show almost unlimited possibilities of actualization of the genre. The paper aims to describe a new approach to studying of the libretto genre in a connection with the theatrical experience of Dimitrin and to open a debate about perspectives for its future research.

- Subject(s):Media studies, Polish Literature
- Page Range:227-235
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:Polish school of reportage; Ziemowit Szczerek; gonzo journalism; reportage-novel; Hunter S. Thompson;
- Summary/Abstract:Works of Ziemowit Szczerek filled an important gap in the Polish discourses about Slavicness and Central Europe, showing their critical, rather negative image. His reportages (though genealogical classification would be ambiguous in this case) are both polemic and a reference to the so-called “Polish school of reportage”, but they are also heavily inspired by the American New Journalism and the “gonzo journalism” of Hunter S. Thompson. In my article I would like to reflect on the kind of literary genres that Szczerek uses, why his diagnosis are innovative and controversial, and analyse his book entitled Przyjdzie Mordor i nas zje, czyli tajna historia Słowian.

- Keywords:clash between relatives; unrecognition; motif; ballad; voice; variant; hero;
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to confront and stratify compositional scheme with а specific motif of clash between relatives due to unrecognition. Equally present in Vuk Karadzic’s, Sima Milutinovic’s, and some Bulgarian variants, same as in the Persian canto Shahnama, this motif reveals it’s complexity based on readers perspective, when the most significant analogies and differences appear in the named scheme: from genre dualism (ballad or epic), to the problem of mythical or naturalistic (historical) space or idea and Maximilian Braun’s typology of heroes.

- Page Range:247-254
- No. of Pages:8
- Keywords:Croatian literature; emancipation; western literary canon; gender; womenʼs magazines; Zagorka;
- Summary/Abstract:The paper is focused on literary works of Marie Juricová Zagorka (1873‒1957) in the context of a Croatian novel. Her serial works were immensely popular, yet often considered to be of lesser literary value. Although her narration draws from canonized model of realistic historical fiction her works are branded by institutional critique as popular trash mostly for uneducated (female) readers. My attention is paid to the gender norms in the context of literary fiction, problem of exclusionary apparatus of cultural gender within patriarchy and gendered power relation of binary system. From that point of view Zagorka’s multifaceted non-stereotypical concept of feminized experience and femininity, is considered “threatening”. In the aim for a different, more balanced, view on her literary work we are posing a question if negative assessment of her works, can be perceived as gendered discipline of female that crossed the gender boundaries.

- Summary/Abstract:Polish text in Russian culture exists as other “texts” (such as St. Petersburg, Italian, etc.), however, it has a complicated synthetic structure, that’s why the task of locating a single semantic centre is supposed to be the relevant problem of modern literary criticism. At the same time, genres of Polish text have not been investigated yet, the scientific analysis is mainly connected with the deconstruction of traditional ethnic stereotypes and cultural myths, existing in the Russian-speaking conceptual sphere. The author of the article makes the first attempt to analyse this problem in accordance with the theory of ontological and epistemological nature of genres by M. M. Bakhtin, wherein each text can be assigned to any genre depending on the purpose of expression.

- Summary/Abstract:The topic of this paper is dystopia, a genre hitherto secondary in Croatian prose, which gained considerable popularity in the last few years. The paper presents an overview of theoretical consideration about the conception of utopia and dystopia. The chosen novels are considered in the context of classic worldwide dystopian prose and analysed through category of exclusion, control and punishment, interpreted in accordance with philosophy of Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, with the aim to show mechanisms of power in dystopian society. This provides answers to the questions about which problems are noticeable in the modern society and what negative consequences portraiture writers. Further, the paper also answers why dystopia has become a popular genre among authors who have been, until now, mostly inclined to criticize reality through a mimetic model.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper deals with the problem of representation of historical events in the play by V. Klimáček. We analyse the reflection of World War II and Slovak State in the play from the perspective of theories of cultural and collective memory. We are interested in the way in which the image of the historical event is formed by a narrative, which elaborates a problematic fragment of the history. We pay attention to perspective from which the reality is being shown, supposing that every analysis forms a specific monument, which subsequently has influence on forming of narrative (national) identity. We analyse the structural elements of the play, which allows showing events from different perspectives and requires an interpretation by a recipient (reader or spectator). At the same time we compare the dramatic text by V. Klimáček and the staging by R. Ballek, analysing means used to produce eventual meaning.
