Summary/Abstract: Modern civilization requires from people certain skills that will make them more productive and valuable members of society. The group of these skills for the 21st century includes, among others, problem-solving and decision-making skills, learning and metacognition skills, critical thinking, communication skills with different cultures, teamwork, personal and social responsibility, creativity and innovation, digital literacy. The importance of the listed skills is reflected in the success of the individual in everyday life, as well as in the professional development and career in which he is engaged. The role of teachers in the process of 406recognizing and developing these abilities in students, especially at a younger school age, is immeasurably important. This task is not at all easy for a teacher, especially if we know that teachers are not sufficiently prepared for the process. Teachers themselves must possess and develop the listed abilities, in order to develop them in their students. The teacher is one of the key factors in the development of students' skills for the 21st century. The aim of this paper is to point out the problem of neglecting the development and encouraging the described skills in students, recognizing the causes of this problem and offering possible solutions to the existing problem. The paper describes examples of methodological procedures and ways of working, which the teacher can use to encourage the described skills in students. Some of the procedures described in the paper are: argumentation during the dialogue, creating your own tables of learning progress, conceptual analysis of the learning content, making information diagrams.
