Summary/Abstract: Viniculture and wine-making belong to the traditional production sectors in Slovakia. Their development has been closely associated with the economic and cultural progress in the particular regions along with the ecological figuration of landscape. In the first part, the paper deals with the whole Slovak wine area that does not represent the most important one from the worldwide point of view. Its internal structure is presented along with the particular wine regions and their districts. There are pointed out natural conditions determining the variety of grape in Slovakia. The core part of the paper pays attention to the Nitra wine region, although it is not the most significant one within the Slovak wine area, but it belongs to the most perspective areas due to its development potential in wine production and wine tourism. Viniculture has a strong tradition there; hence it represents a contribution to the development of rural economy.
