RESULTS CONCERNING THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE OTHERNESS FROM A LINGUISTIC APPROACH

Summary/Abstract: In the present study, I wish to give an account of the findings of a survey aiming at discovering to what extent students at a specific higher education institution accept otherness and displaying their attitudes towards various minorities – or groups that can be interpreted as such –, using a questionnaire based on the significance of verbal expression. In the course of the research, I applied a questionnaire designed to map their tolerance towards the Roma, Jews, homosexuals, women, and political refugees, using questions relating to various selected passages and quotations(excerpts from poems, novels, pieces of news, and jokes), thus focusing on the religious, political, and gender-related dimensions of the issue. I am confident that the data collected in such an indirect way are more sincere and reveal more of the real beliefs of the respondents than the indices arising from direct questions.
