Summary/Abstract: The volume dedicated to the memory of Dr Olga Murvai comprises the conference papers on the topic of current issues related to the European culture of communication. The event was organized in Targu-Mures in the period of 27─28 May 2011. Through the thematic and methodological diversity of the studies, the book introduces us to the world of interferences of national cultures, drawing our attention to the fact that linguistic and communicational culture is changing over time and varies from space to space owing to intercultural interactions.

- Summary/Abstract:The beginning of publishing Hungarian newspapers goes back to 1848. The turbulent historical, political, and social changes have not been able to hinder the continuity of the local periodicals. The characteristic feature of the period in the history of the press, which started in 1945, was the bilingual (Hungarian–Serbo–Croat) periodicals. The slowly developing privatization in the 1990s encouraged the founding of newspapers/periodicals. Next to the bilingual papers, some multilingual editions became also published. However, newspapers/periodicals do not always present Hungarian culture in satisfactory proportion; they do not provide satisfactorily detailed information to the Hungarian population in the minority, or even sometimes in the majority, in their mother tongue as it would be adequate to their proportion in the town/village. In the reverse situation, when the Serbian population is in the minority, the picture is much more satisfactory.

- Summary/Abstract:My paper intends to demonstrate the changes in Jewish multilingualism from the Jewish Enlightenment to WW I based on two types of subjective sources: the literary lexicon from József Szinnyei and memoirs of Jewish intellectuals working in 19th century Hungary. During the lifetime of these four generations, the initial situation of multilingualism (Yiddish mother tongue, Latin scientific prose, Hebraic and German Enlightenment, and Hungarian acculturation)underwent several transformations due to secularization, religious reform, and the struggles for emancipation. The result, a proud Hungarian monoligualism, can be accounted for the marginalization of the Hungarian Jews in the mainstream international Jewish (Yiddish, Hebrew, German, and English) discourse.

- Summary/Abstract:Among the national minorities that live in Northern Europe, the Lapps (or Sámi) are the oldest. Even if they live on the territory of four countries, they have never had their own state. What ties them together is their specific culture and language, both so different from the other languages and cultures in the North. This paper aims both at a synchronic and a diachronic depiction of the language of the Lapps, respectively of their struggle for their linguistic rights that so often were constrained by the authorities and the majority population.

- Summary/Abstract:The attention on the Moldavian Csangos dialect dates back to the 19thcentury. The regular linguistic researches show that the Csango communities have preserved the archaic Hungarian dialect, rich in medieval elements. Recently, a number of Hungarian, Romanian, and foreign researchers have engaged in the issues of Hungarian language in Moldavia, so the published literature is very diverse and rich. The present paper focuses on the possessive adjective structures, which are manifested in the Moldavian Csango language. I analyse the general possessive adjective structures, their word orders, notations, meanings, and possessive-like locutions. The data was compiled from my own fieldwork and from the articles to be found at the Babeş-Bolyai University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Hungarian and General Linguistics.

- Summary/Abstract:Ghost in Lublo (1893) is a typical novel from Kálmán Mikszáth. The edited and arranged text of the novel is referred to itself and it becomes the main characteristic feature besides that the approach and frame of reference are inco-ordinate relation, instead of being predominant, to the detriment of each other. The fact that there is no tangible verdict or sentiment means the lack of the absolute and undisputed standpoint in the fiction allowed by the unreliable narrative structure. (Similar novels in regard to it are: Black Town, Speaking Gown, St. Peter’s Umbrella, and Siege of Beszterce.) The interpretation of the novel stays unfinished as we cannot decide whether the novel is a detective story or a ghost story. The importance of dialogue is emphasized through the novel in numerous linguistic features, cultural and literary references, and the several possible interpretations of the novel.

- Summary/Abstract:In addition to the traditional models of communication, which can already be characterized by the high complexity of approaches and representations(depending on the number of people included in the act of communication, their social position, the type of their contact in space and time, the kind of code and channel they use, the possibility of feedback, etc.), the appearance and widespread use of the Internet provide us with new possibilities and ways of making social contacts, leading to further, even more complex divisions of the existing communication models. This is especially characteristic of the social network services (e.g. Facebook), where the most complex organization and realization of communication patterns can be recognized. This paper is an attempt at identifying and sketching the main features of these models.

- Summary/Abstract:The functions of TV were accomplished by researchers for decades, from the beginning of its communicational resources. From the beginning, its importance in the society kept the attention of the sociologists and experts in communications. As opposed to commercial televisions, public televisions have a special situation because their establishment is supported by taxes paid by the citizens; their legal obligation (prescribed and controlled by the law) is to give valid and high-fidelity information to all taxpayers. According to this definition, public TV broadcasted on ethnic minority regions like Szeklerland must meet the expectations of licence holders, too, from this region. In my dissertation, I compare the communication features of the Romanian TV News to the Hungarian Transmission News broadcasted through Duna TV and RTV.

- Summary/Abstract:The recently emerging new media has partially reshaped the differences in intergenerational communication in the rural areas subject to our investigation. On the one hand, the results of our study show that the adult world still keeps up the traditional forms of communication. On the other hand, adults’ communication strategies are embedded in the past, they are built upon the rhythms imposed by rural economy, and they are conventional and grounded on the actants’ direct involvement. They have been socialized in diffuse households, and their culture is co-figurative. Young people’s communication habits are already based on the world of digital communication and the media. This type of communication partially allows mediated virtual connection and activities. It could be defined as a prefigurative form of communication and its traditions, i.e. quickly changing and fictitious, yet ritualistic actions are mostly intergenerational.

- Summary/Abstract:In the present study, I wish to give an account of the findings of a survey aiming at discovering to what extent students at a specific higher education institution accept otherness and displaying their attitudes towards various minorities – or groups that can be interpreted as such –, using a questionnaire based on the significance of verbal expression. In the course of the research, I applied a questionnaire designed to map their tolerance towards the Roma, Jews, homosexuals, women, and political refugees, using questions relating to various selected passages and quotations(excerpts from poems, novels, pieces of news, and jokes), thus focusing on the religious, political, and gender-related dimensions of the issue. I am confident that the data collected in such an indirect way are more sincere and reveal more of the real beliefs of the respondents than the indices arising from direct questions.

- Summary/Abstract:The concept of identity is familiar for everyone: in common talk, literature, and in the course of social interactions, we can find multiple interpretation opportunities. The framing of our identity is not a result of speculation but it is such a socialization process where – in the course of social interactions, experiencing the others’ behaviour and reactions – we build our ego, we form our identity. The components of our identity are the totality of knowledge aggregation, which have historical and cultural-historical dimensions. For that very reason, the culture in every identity element is a decisive and fundamental factor. In intercultural relations, the minorities have continuous connections with other members of the society what at the same time supposes the majority’s value and norm system acquirement. Hence, the minority societies have to correspond to various social roles, hereby enlarging their identity with new elements.

- Summary/Abstract:The children’s literature, fairy tales, and poetry are parts of people’s life, which entertain and teach them; they are delights and sources of happiness for children and adults equally. They can be real treasure in the hands of a competent, well-trained kindergarten teacher by including them into the structures of preschool activities. It may offer the possibility to develop native language skills and creativity. The paper presents creativity stimulating methodologies of approaching and mediating children’s literature from the perspective of professional training regarding kindergarten teachers. These methodologies show the steps from individual reception through preparation, procedures, documents, and auxiliary themes for mediation to gaining experience.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper, I analyse how contiguous and often opposing communication patterns shape pupils’ linguistic manifestations in solving communication problems. The pupils’ eclectic writings show a mingling of patterns. The linguistic formation of the texts evince that pupils fulfil the expectations of the language code promoted by the school when they focus on respecting the language norms. However, their orientation towards the norms of style is heavily affected by the altered aesthetic norms and mode of their immediate surroundings.

- Summary/Abstract:International educational measurements (e.g. IEA, PISA) show that pupils' sex has an important effect on their school progress and achievements. The present essay studies the text formation skills of Hungarian pupils living in Transylvania and the fact whether their sex influences this or not. Our aim was to find out the boy-girl rate in these schools, the difference between the text formation skills of boys and girls, how much, what, and in what language they read. Does the quantity or the language of their readings influence the text writing skills and progress? Is there a difference between the reading habits of boys and girls?

- Summary/Abstract:The paper focuses on the overlap of language, culture, language teaching, and higher education from a theoretical point of view and by presenting a practical example. It discusses the relationship of language and culture, inter- and multiculturalism, and the cultural dimension of language teaching. Then it presents a specific Hungarian higher educational example in which, at the Centre for Foreign Language Education of the University of Pannonia, Japanese language had its prominent place in the encounter of languages and cultures –predominantly between 2009 and 2011 and within the J-CAT Programme.

- Summary/Abstract:Our quality of life is reflected in the way we use language. The imperative function of language and the rhetorical situation urges us to decide and act. It is a moral norm that the spoken text separates True and False. At the same time, in language behaviour, one can observe ethical values and assessments, such as the aspects of the Good, the Right, and Justice. Our proverbs and sayings demand that speeches and speakers consider these aspects. Dealing with this field of study is crucial from the point of view of language education, cultural behaviour, and mental health care.

- Summary/Abstract:In 2010, during the traditional Kosztolányi Dezső Days in Szabadka (Subotica), we organized an international scientific discussion in the spirit of the literary translation; the theme of the conference appeared in the edition of the City Library with the title Faithful to whom or what. This lecture expatiates on the scientific problems brought up during the discussion, as well as, on the Serbian Lark translation involved there, though the examination of the German novel translations are in the focus. The three German Lark translators are: Klaus Schmuck (1970), Christina Viragh (2007), and Heinrich Eisterer (2007).

- Summary/Abstract:We live in a global world; therefore, the influence (mostly English) is present in every field of life, e.g. sports, banking, commerce, media, and tourism. The question is: What is the status of the English words in the Hungarian language? Are they loanwords for the moment or only for restricted group of people (e.g. students)? My dissertation deals with a terminology analysis and the behaviour of English words used in the Hungarian tourists’ terminology and contains a questionnaire (filled out by students) concerning the use of words and expressions of English origin (collected from different newspapers and magazines) in the Hungarian language of tourist industry.

- Summary/Abstract:The study deals with the aspects of joining translation and canon, translation and ideology, and mentions some concrete translator solutions. The works of Nándor Gion have been started to be translated in the seventies. Behind the translations stood the aesthetic value of the works, the multilingual, multi-ethnic character of the region and political interest, the ideology of fraternity-unit of Tito’s Yugoslavia; the works of the national minorities have been translated into the languages of the nations of Yugoslavia and reversely. Despite the transliteration, Gion’s awarded novel entitled Testvérem, Joáb (My brother, Joáb) was not translated because ideologically it was not in accordance with the prevailing political views, and politically it did not correspond to the power system. The claim of translating Gion’s works lasting until today points to the fact that these works are able to address the widest circle of readers living in other cultures.

In spite of this fact, one cannot escape from law. Thus, the translator has a huge responsibility because an error could cause unpleasant events in a person’s life. Legal texts are difficult; that is why, it is necessary to interpret them. In conclusion, we may say that if translations in general are problematic, legal translations can create even greater problems.

- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of the present study is twofold: to make an investigation into the applicability of certain mathematical structures and traditional set theories to the field of terminology, and thus show the relationships between given concepts. The aim of our research of the analysis of French and Hungarian higher education terminology is to encode distinct lexemes and examine the relations between the different codes. The current study may shed further light on the applicability of these codes and may provide an answer to why these codes can be suitable – in certain cases even more suitable than traditional lexemes – for the analysis of conceptual relations. Findings gained through the analysis of the relations between the codes will hopefully provide us with a clearer and steadier view of the relationships between the designated concepts and will help us reduce conceptual ambiguities or unclarities.

- Summary/Abstract:These days, rewriting classical literary works is very popular. The slogan could be ‘classics with ease’, that is our great writers should be published in an abridged form so as to please the reader. This is characteristic not only of Hungarian but of world literature as well. In my essay, I write about the adaptations of Mark Twain’s two very popular novels (in Romania, as well) – The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. First, I give the definition of rewriting, illustrating with some historical examples. After the short theoretical introduction, I introduce the different adaptations of the two works. As an illustration, I will show four different texts.

Courses were held in the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Romanian, and Polish. During the training, came the idea to compile a literary translators’ lexicon. Andrea Papp, Judit Vihar, and myself decided to edit the publication, of course, with the help of other colleagues. In my paper, I write about the editing principles, the research methods, and the planned deadlines. - Summary/Abstract:The article deals with the importance of literature in culture. First of all, literature preserves the culture of a nation, and the task of the writer is to make it transparent as Durrenmatt suggested in Promise. Furthermore, literature is also turned into films and rewritten in scripts, even code-switching is applied. Past events are described grammatically in literature, whereas films show the storyline in present, intertwined with dialogues referring to the past. Results of child psychology are also discussed in the paper regarding emotional expressions. The conclusion raises the question whether Malraux or Hemingway owes anything to the art of film technique.

- Summary/Abstract:The language of short text messages (omission of sonants, unique contractions, phonetic script, uppercase or lowercase styles of writing, shortened versions of English words, etc.), with its idiosyncratic norms and rules of use, makes up a part of everyday reality for the younger generation and is engendered by the need for transmitting as much information as possible within the framework of mobile technology. However, in recent times, it presents itself not only in the peculiarities of everyday speech acts, but also in advertisement campaigns launched by multinational companies. If this is the case, these advertisements, brochures, and invitations need to be translated into the language of other ethnic groups, which often requires unique adaptations in the case of these texts. Considering that specific features of expression sometimes differ form one language to the next, this task is no small challenge to translators.

- Summary/Abstract:The basic idea is that all analogies determining the relationships between text isotopes have a reverse: due to mediation, senses overlap, one sense replacing the other, one meaning sends us to another, and the poet constantly shifts the semantic registers. This continuous diversion of isotopes is corrected by lectura tabula, which serves as a unifying and equipoising element of all these senses. As one can observe, linguistic rhetoric fully covers the field of Jakobson’s poetic function, incorporating the study of linguistic procedures, which is characteristic – among others – to literary discourse as well.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this study is to draw up a comparative analysis of morphemes accounting for the number and case inflection categories in Hungarian and Romanian. I have approached aspects related to the morphological structure of these unrelated languages so as to highlight both shared and divergent structural elements. The differences particularly pinpoint the two divergent morphological types, the agglutinative and the inflectional one in Hungarian and Romanian. However, the two languages do not make exclusive use of only one of these two types. Moreover, I have not tackled all inflectional paradigms but merely the aspects pointing at the different morphological structure of nouns in the two languages. I have reinforced my analysis with several examples from the two languages.

Caragiale, and it offers some possible ways to approach the most important European languages. The author identifies the major problem in the fact that the hilarious characters of Caragiale use a lot of French loanwords, which were incorrectly adapted and used by those who wanted to imitate the real Romanian elite formed in Paris after 1848. Nowadays, it is extremely difficult to translate these merry aberrations, even for the French.

- Summary/Abstract:The topic of the present article, literal and free translation, points to an age-old debate among translators, which nevertheless has not received due attention from researchers. It was my experience with students of translation studies that brought it to my attention. What makes a translation appropriate? How do professionals translate as opposed to semi-professionals or non-professionals? The answer to these questions would reveal more about the process of translation itself. My article is an attempt to compare two Hungarian translations of George Steiner’s After Babel, which is an influential contribution to the field of translation studies and language philosophy.

- Summary/Abstract:Considering Shakespeare’s King Lear as a uniquely complex dramatic representation of a universal crisis in human culture and communication, I propose to reveal in my study in what ways the Hungarian King Lear translations are related to the original and to one another. In Hungarian culture, King Lear took roots at about the last decade of the 18th century and blossomed fully in the romantic period when Shakespeare became a symbol of spiritual freedom. Since1792, when the first Hungarian theatre was opened in Cluj-Napoca, thirteen well distinguishable, different Hungarian King Lear translations have been created, and the Hungarian theatre was continuously looking for the newest or / and the most appropriate text to be performed.

- Summary/Abstract:Computer assisted translation (CAT) offers the possibility of investigating a large database fed into the translation memory and the term base of translation environments, such as SDL Trados, or MemoQ. We look into the possibilities of adding the English modal verb can to a term base with many of its possible meanings, and check whether this will speed up the process of translation into non-Indo-European languages, such as Romanian, or Hungarian.
