COMMUNICATION IN KING LEAR AND ITS HUNGARIAN TRANSLATIONS

Summary/Abstract: Considering Shakespeare’s King Lear as a uniquely complex dramatic representation of a universal crisis in human culture and communication, I propose to reveal in my study in what ways the Hungarian King Lear translations are related to the original and to one another. In Hungarian culture, King Lear took roots at about the last decade of the 18th century and blossomed fully in the romantic period when Shakespeare became a symbol of spiritual freedom. Since1792, when the first Hungarian theatre was opened in Cluj-Napoca, thirteen well distinguishable, different Hungarian King Lear translations have been created, and the Hungarian theatre was continuously looking for the newest or / and the most appropriate text to be performed.
