Summary/Abstract: The topic of the present article, literal and free translation, points to an age-old debate among translators, which nevertheless has not received due attention from researchers. It was my experience with students of translation studies that brought it to my attention. What makes a translation appropriate? How do professionals translate as opposed to semi-professionals or non-professionals? The answer to these questions would reveal more about the process of translation itself. My article is an attempt to compare two Hungarian translations of George Steiner’s After Babel, which is an influential contribution to the field of translation studies and language philosophy.
