Summary/Abstract: The topic of this article is to prove that the “Gordian knot of translation” (Bassnett 2002: 135), namely the attempt to solve the somehow intractable problem of re-creating the meaning of the source text in the target language, is text-type-related and oriented. This article tries to identify and define the obstacles encountered when translating somatic verbal idioms indicating the most significant factors that should be taken into account in overcoming them. It explores the notion of “transfer” versus that of “equivalence” in translation, the difficulty of recognizing, interpreting and, finally, transferring an idiom into the target language and finding an appropriate translation.
