ASSESSMENT OF NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR LEARNING REGIONS IN SLOVAKIA

Summary/Abstract: According to the National Programme for Learning Regions, the gradual reduction of disparities in living standards among Slovak regions is considered for a long term strategic goal within regional development, and one of the tools to achieve this objective, the concept of learning regions is proposed. The aim of this article was to construct one headline and partial indicators assessing the current status and progress of Slovak regions under the National Programme for Learning Regions using PCA method. The highest value of the overall index reached Trnava Region followed by the Bratislava region. The results pointed out relatively large differences between regions; according to accessible data and used method, closest to the fulfillment of the idea of a learning region is Trnava and Bratislava region; the lowest values reached Banská Bystrica, Prešov and Košice region.
