Summary/Abstract: The present paper raises the question of the possibilities of toleration – as a fundamental political principle of liberal societies – to propose a solution that will satisfy the claims for equality and justice of historically disadvantaged and marginalized social groups in contemporary democratic societies. By drawing a line between the “positive” and “negative” dimensions of toleration, the paper sets out the main limitations of the classical liberal concept of “negative toleration” (i.e., toleration based on indifference, lenience and permission that pushes the beliefs and the practices of minority groups in the private sphere) to respond adequately to the challenges facing today’s multicultural societies. Based on this, the paper also attempts to substantiate the thesis of the need to replace this concept of toleration with a more positive one that is sensitive to difference and not indifferent to it.
