Summary/Abstract: It is clear even for lay (non-linguist) speakers that languages cannot be understood as static, unchanging systems because, although the language used by older generations is different from the one used by younger generations, there are no communication problems between them. At the same time, the current state of languages is also diverse, with older and newer varieties living side by side, without the “new” replacing the “old” in an instance. The current state of any language has not been created by replacing an earlier state but is the result of a process. The study examines the spread of new words and expressions in the online news published by Radio Romania Bucharest during the coronavirus epidemic and shows how language reacts to new realities: a separate layer of vocabulary has evolved to reflect the changing world.
