Summary/Abstract: The book is a tribute to Rita Pletl’s decades-long teaching and research career, a modest summary of her significance to those with whom she has worked together, believing in the timelessness of intellectual accomplishments, exigence, moral strength, but also of culture and creativity in the classical sense. The texts that make up the volume are varied: they include essays, studies, memoir-like writings, summaries, articles presenting empirical research, and greetings from friends and family. Our volume is an homage and an expression of gratitude, the celebration of the invaluable, persistent work that has characterised Rita Pletl’s life and career.

- Keywords:generation gap; addressing the public; public attitude; methods of communication; private and public sphere;
- Summary/Abstract:The individual’s way of addressing the public has gone through a considerable change since the emergence of social media. The Internet makes it possible for anyone to become a content creator, and it gives them the necessary incentives to consider uploading shocking content a priority. Thus, the content of the private sphere is becoming more and more acceptable to appear in front of the public eye. It logically follows from this that public attitude is also changing, this being the central problem of my paper: the members of older generations are horrified that our constantly evolving technology provides opportunity for anyone (including groups having political interest in it) to thoroughly observe (or “spy” on) our personal lives, while younger generations do not quite understand the dangers involved, as they, by their own free will, present details of their private lives for anyone using social media to see. Changing methods of communication always reshaped our understanding of the public sphere, but it seems that the gap between younger and older generations is now wider than ever. We must rethink not only our relationship with the public but also the notion of freedom of opinion and the borders between the private and the public sphere.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper provides a review of the history, results, and perspectives of the research on the language use of the Hungarian audiovisual and online press in Romania. In the first part, I present the background of the monitoring of the Hungarian press in Romania, its legal basis and its place in the context of the objectives set by the National Audiovisual Council of Romania. I describe the basic principles and methodology of the study while presenting the four volumes containing the results of the research. The second part of the paper presents the background, methodological principles, and preliminary results of the research phase of the study launched in 2021 on the language use of the online Hungarian press in Romania, and it concludes with a brief discussion of possible applications.

- Author(s):Borbála Zsemlyei
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:53-60
- No. of Pages:8
- Keywords:language use; history of language; variaties of language; Radio Romania Bucharest;
- Summary/Abstract:It is clear even for lay (non-linguist) speakers that languages cannot be understood as static, unchanging systems because, although the language used by older generations is different from the one used by younger generations, there are no communication problems between them. At the same time, the current state of languages is also diverse, with older and newer varieties living side by side, without the “new” replacing the “old” in an instance. The current state of any language has not been created by replacing an earlier state but is the result of a process. The study examines the spread of new words and expressions in the online news published by Radio Romania Bucharest during the coronavirus epidemic and shows how language reacts to new realities: a separate layer of vocabulary has evolved to reflect the changing world.

(POSSIBLE ABBREVIATED FORMS IN THE HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE)
- Author(s):Attila Imre
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Lexis
- Page Range:61-75
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:abbreviations; acronyms; Hungarian language; Hungarian orthography;
- Summary/Abstract:The article is centred around the topic of abbreviations and acronyms. It presents several terminological issues, which partly stem from the definitions used in the academic rules of Hungarian orthography (AkH.12). We outline the relevant studies in the Hungarian scholarly literature (between 1950 and 2022), discussing definitions, explanations, and examples. Our aim is to provide a logical framework for the different types of abbreviations and acronyms. We also give the English equivalents of the Hungarian terms and reference authors who question the hierarchy of established terms. The conclusions formulate a systemic critique, questioning the effectiveness of the rules and introducing further categories that need to be discussed.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper focuses on the economic aspects of linguistic landscape research. There is relatively little literature in Hungarian or English dealing specifically with the economic characteristics of linguistic landscapes, and there is no precise delineation of this area of research. The authors define the concept of economic linguistic landscape (econscape) and describe some of the aspects of economy in the linguistic landscape of two border towns, Komárom/Komárno and Komárom.

- Author(s):Zsuzsanna Kiss
- Language:Hungarian

- Page Range:89-111
- No. of Pages:23
- Keywords:literary translation; reception; translatability;
- Summary/Abstract:World literature, although having existed before, was given a name by Goethe (Weltliteratur), and it comprises the nations of the world in one vast family: a hierarchical, yet fraternal order of families. When we become acquainted with a literary masterpiece of another nation, the act of understanding and reception is perhaps naturally and inevitably followed by a kind of homecoming, of placement. Although literary translation has been called a genre of the impossible, translatability is inherent in the nature of truly good literature. The paper explores important issues of literary translation, while the author also includes some of her own translations of poems, annotated by the herself.

- Keywords:Amurgul burghez; Ceauşescu period; local drama; Târgu-Mureş National Theatre;
- Summary/Abstract:On Friday, 4 February 1983, spectators gathered for the premiere of Târgu-Mureş National Theatre’s Hungarian department. The performance entitled Egy öngyilkos világa was directed by Dan Alecsandrescu and is based on the drama signed by an autochthonous and even local author, Romulus Guga: Amurgul burghez (The Bourgeois Twilight). The analysis of this theatrical event shows the evolution of the interpretation of the contemporary local drama in the Ceauşescu period. I reviewed the semantic changes of the term, and I examined how they affected the repertoire of the theatre from Târgu-Mureş in that time.

- Author(s):Péter Tóth, Kinga Horváthová
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Education, Communication studies
- Page Range:133-147
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:communication style; interaction skills; interpersonal behaviour;
- Summary/Abstract:The teacher’s activity, including his/her interpersonal behaviour, interaction skills and competence, is of decisive importance for the effectiveness of teaching and learning. Interaction can be understood as a two-way, interpersonal communication. In the present study, the focus is on the interpersonal behaviour model based on the personality theory (IPC-T) developed by Wubbels and his colleagues. Questionnaires (QTI, QSI) have also been developed for this model. Through this, eight different styles of teacher communication were identified, and their characterization is described in this paper. In the context of the discussion of teacher communication during the tutorials, concrete examples of each type will be presented.

- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:COVID-19 pandemic; remote learning; ICT; Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania; learning and teaching practice;
- Summary/Abstract:From March 2020 on, teachers suddenly had to familiarize themselves with an educational practice that required a lot of creativity on their part but also challenged teachers’ and students’ adaptability, together with past forms of working. The COVID-19 pandemic, as in many other countries, led to severe restrictions in Romania, including the immediate introduction of remote learning at all levels of education. As a result, we were faced with a completely new situation, without the technology and practice needed for remote learning and without an adequate mastery of the new information and communication tools. The present study aims to find out how the new ways of working brought about change and what is different in the learning and teaching practice in the translation and interpreting programme at Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, Department of Applied Linguistics. The results of two questionnaire surveys are used to answer some of the questions and to draw conclusions.

- Page Range:167-178
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:teaching Romanian language and literature; Hungarian pupils in Romania; textbook analysis; post-communicative language teaching;
- Summary/Abstract:Romanian language and literature is a compulsory subject for students of the Hungarian minority in Romania. The teaching of Romanian to Hungarian children and its shortcomings is a controversial and much-debated topic among teachers, parents, researchers, and policy-makers involved in the process. In recent years, several attempts have been made to bring about the expected paradigm shift in the teaching of Romanian in order to allow Hungarian pupils to learn Romanian as a foreign language. This has been successfully introduced in the elementary classes, but there is a significant difference in the levels and content of the textbooks for the 4th and 5th grades, which causes serious difficulties for 5th graders. Our study presents the initial stages of a textbook analysis. We examine the extent to which one of the textbooks available for 5th graders follows the methodological shift of communicative and post-communicative language teaching and makes use of the possibilities offered by the learners’ linguistic repertoire.

- Author(s):Enikő Biró, Krisztina Sárosi-Márdirosz
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Foreign languages learning, Higher Education
- Page Range:179-196
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:linguistic competence; translator training; foreign language teaching;
- Summary/Abstract:This article aims to highlight the link between language teaching – language learning and translator training. Given that linguistic competence is considered to be one of the most important translator competences, it is essential that translators have a high level of proficiency in all their working languages. This means, of course, that not only their foreign language skills but also their mother tongue skills must be constantly improved. In addition to the development of language competences, the development of the five additional competences identified by Gambier in 2009 for professional translators should not be neglected in translator training. This article aims to show why a very high level of language proficiency, while essential, is not sufficient to be a successful freelance translator. It also discusses how the general rules of foreign language teaching and the methods used for the development of language skills should be transformed in this process in order that the other competences be developed in equal proportion. The practical issues presented in the article reflect on the practices adopted and implemented by Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania in its foreign language teaching and translator training processes.

- Summary/Abstract:The study presents the history and the current situation of the Faroese language, the most important stages in its development and revival. The paper discusses in detail the background to the reform of the Faroese language and the development of its orthography, giving examples that illustrate the grammatical differences between Faroese and other Scandinavian languages. In describing the current state of the language, it can be stated that although there are still shortcomings in the field of specialized languages, Faroese is now used at all levels of the education system.

- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:student success; Center for Higher Educational Research and Development of the University of Debrecen; Partium region;
- Summary/Abstract:In addition to the academic performance of its professors, the effectiveness of a higher education institution is reflected in attracting and retaining students, as well as in their performance. The majority of education policy-makers and researchers state that student success is defined as the success of those who are able to complete their studies. However, this does not provide sufficient basis for evaluation during the study period. In previous research projects conducted by the Center for Higher Educational Research and Development of the University of Debrecen in Hungarian-language higher education institutions in the Carpathian Basin, we sought to identify indicators that predict long-term student success. In the present study, we investigate students (N = 341)from three higher education institutions in the Partium region in terms of whether the religious ethos of the institution and the religiousness of the students contribute to their success. Our results show that there is a significant intersectoral variation between the higher education institutions in the region, with differences in the achievement of the students from different institutions.

- Keywords:primary and secondary education; higher education institutions; early drop-out; drop-out rates; Corvinus University of Budapest;
- Summary/Abstract:Just as in the case of primary and secondary education institutions, an important indicator for higher education institutions is their drop-out rate. Relatively high rates in higher education also point to causes and problems that need to be addressed at the institutional level. The negative impact of early drop-out (e.g. reduced efficiency in the use of resources, loss of institutional revenues, reduced labour market opportunities for students, lack of success) is, of course, felt not only at the level of an educational institution but also at the level of individuals and the national economy. There are many possible reasons behind the drop-out rates. Identifying them provides higher education institutions with an important basis for improving the quality of education, planning and designing teaching-learning processes, creating a learning environment, and ensuring student support. In our study, we use the example of Corvinus University of Budapest to illustrate how, having identified the extent and causes of the problem, improvements have been made to support students.
