Summary/Abstract: The article is centred around the topic of abbreviations and acronyms. It presents several terminological issues, which partly stem from the definitions used in the academic rules of Hungarian orthography (AkH.12). We outline the relevant studies in the Hungarian scholarly literature (between 1950 and 2022), discussing definitions, explanations, and examples. Our aim is to provide a logical framework for the different types of abbreviations and acronyms. We also give the English equivalents of the Hungarian terms and reference authors who question the hierarchy of established terms. The conclusions formulate a systemic critique, questioning the effectiveness of the rules and introducing further categories that need to be discussed.
