Summary/Abstract: With writing as a key language skill and English as a lingua franca of international communication, it is necessary to teach students to communicate appropriately in the given context and with regard to the addressee, not only in speaking but also in writing. This study reviews research on the effect of incorporating explicit pragmatic instruction into English lessons on the development of learners’ pragmatic competence, chiefly in relation to written communication skills.
