Summary/Abstract: This volume of proceedings is a result of a Specific Research project conducted in 2021 with the registration number MUNI/A/1239/2020 – Research on Learning and Teaching Foreign Languages. The contributions present the research studies of those doctoral students in the field of Foreign Language Didactics at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University. - Summary/Abstract:This study aims to provide an insight into the current research of the development of the self-assessment skill, focusing on tertiary students of English. The study poses the following questions: How is self-assessment defined in the selected research papers? What are the most common aims and methods of the selected research papers? What are the essential findings of the selected research papers? The selected research papers show that the development of the self-assessment skill has a positive effect on the overall language acquisition. Research into the actual process of the development of self-assessment skills is still scarce.

- Summary/Abstract:This research study aims to map journal research articles related to the integration of authentic literary texts into foreign language classroom and monitor at the same time how they deal with the term “reading for pleasure”. It is based on 5 journal research articles which show that the issue is topical, yet there is a notable lack of sources dealing with French as a foreign language. Therefore, comparable research which focus on different foreign languages, namely Spanish or English, were chosen.

- Summary/Abstract:This review maps the research on the role of pedagogical translation and mediation activities in the teaching of French in tertiary education. The selected research papers suggest that the use of mother tongue can be an important and equal tool for communication skills development in second/foreign language acquisition and supports interculturality in education, similarly to mediation activities in mother tongue or target language.

- Summary/Abstract:With writing as a key language skill and English as a lingua franca of international communication, it is necessary to teach students to communicate appropriately in the given context and with regard to the addressee, not only in speaking but also in writing. This study reviews research on the effect of incorporating explicit pragmatic instruction into English lessons on the development of learners’ pragmatic competence, chiefly in relation to written communication skills.
