Summary/Abstract: The article presents a comprehensive approach to studying the press reception of a writer (a wo/man of letters, an author) by bringing together various methods from literary studies, linguistic and cultural studies. The source material used in this study comprises press texts about Leo Tolstoy’s departure from Yasnaya Polyana (1910), which marks the final and crucial event in his biography. Drawing on comparisons to Buddha which are mentioned in the press (Tolstoy as “Russian Sakyamuni”/“Russian Buddha”), I discuss how the image of the writer changed in the wake of new circumstances and factors.
