Summary/Abstract: This multi-author monograph is the result of the jubilee scientific conference organised at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics of the University of Warsaw to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Applied Linguistics. The editors aimed to make individual chapters and problems raised in the publication correspond with the subject of (applied) linguistics and its numerous subdisciplines. Apart from the articles devoted to subdisciplines recognised in the linguists’ environment, such as glottodidactics, translation, terminology or specialist communication, the monograph contains texts on relatively new subdisciplines, including avialinguistics and jurisprudence. The monograph is complemented by reflections on broadly understood culture and literature.

- Summary/Abstract:The Warsaw movement in linguistics in the field of specific purposes supported the aviation language and communication studies in Poland. In the second decade of the 21st century, the worldwide research gap in this context was fulfilled and aviation linguistics knowledge systematised. Hence, a new branch of linguistics evolved – avialinguistics – as an interdisciplinary branch of applied linguistics. Aviation language has become a regular object of international study. The research context covers current linguistics problems of aviation. The main objective of the new study is to prepare theoretical bases for the application of necessary solutions that are to improve aeronautical communications and at the same time flight safety. The paper presents avialinguistics with its objects, aims and tasks.

- Keywords:jurilinguistics; legal linguistics; forensic linguistics; methodology; corpus linguistics; comparative/contrastive studies; triangulation in research
- Summary/Abstract:This chapter aims to reflect on the methodology of research carried out in jurilinguistics or legal linguistics, i.e. a discipline which draws upon both law and linguistics. This contribution focuses on the autonomy of methods in jurilinguistics indicating its two sources: either the methods should be created to cater to its specific needs, or they should borrow from other disciplines, especially law. In effect, there is a need to triangulate various research methods. A wide range of research methods is illustrated by referring to studies done in the Department of Specialised Languages and Intercultural Communication, University of Lodz.

- Keywords:term in the form of metaphor; metaphor; cognitive linguistics; critical discourse analysis; cross-disciplinary
- Summary/Abstract:The economic terms in the form of metaphors have become quite a numerous and diversified representation compared to other terminological units, which has been proved by my research on terms in Russian economic texts. This leads to a need to identify and define the research principles which enable to systematize the collected material, to indicate the correlation between metaphor, metonymy and phrasemes in relation to terms, to detect and explain differences in presenting the meanings of the terms, their interpretation and new functions in non-professional contexts. Furthermore, the comparative approach will allow to determine the tendencies (as well as differences and similarities) in borrowing and adapting new terms from the source language (English) into host languages (Russian and Polish).

- Page Range:77-94
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:semantic frame; vaccination; social advertising; semantics of understanding; Covid-19
- Summary/Abstract:The paper aims to present the results of a study on changes within the frame of vaccination (IT: vaccinazione, PL: szczepienie) that have occurred as a consequence of institutional social communication related to the Covid-19 pandemic. The concept of frame is understood as a way of categorizing in the reality and a method used for localizing the meaning of the concept under consideration, according to Charles Fillmore’s theory of semantics of understanding. Two sets of advertisements published in 2021 by Italian and Polish public institutions (the Ministry of Health, the Council of Ministers), as part of campaigns promoting vaccination against Covid-19, are compiled. By creating the corpus of texts for analysis, these advertisements form the basis of the linguistic measures which reflect the widening of the considered frame.

- Keywords:linguistic features of disinformation; online disinformation; fake news
- Summary/Abstract:Online disinformation has plagued the modern world – society has witnessed how skilfully executed fake news campaigns can help tip the balance of power in democratic elections, or lead to the deaths of hundreds of people. Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022, one has seen how physical actions on the battlefield have been carried out in parallel with an extensive disinformation campaign. This article analyses whether the linguistic features of the COVID-19 pandemic fake news headlines have changed, or whether they are the same as those from the time of the 2016 US presidential campaign. This will allow us to examine whether the adversary is learning their lessons and drawing conclusions to better disguise the disinformation.

- Summary/Abstract:Pluricentricity or the concept of pluricentricity has long been present in the ‘language market’, but has been ‘poorly marketed’ until now. The following questions now arise: Why is the pluricentric concept misunderstood, especially by Germans? What hinders its better “marketing”? Why is it rather unpopular with learners (pupils/students)? The market-relevant question, on the other hand, is: what career advantages could learners gain by being familiar with the pluri-centric concept and having specific passive and active knowledge? The article will try to answer all these questions, at least to some extent.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents a short history of the development of glottodidactics (i.e. foreign language teaching and learning), especially in Poland. A very important moment in its history was the year 1972, when the Institute of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw was established, which gave rise to the development of glottodidactics as an independent scientific discipline. Until today not only the Institute, but the whole Faculty of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw is an important center of glottodidactic research. Therefore, the article not only presents the historical background, but also the most interesting glottodidactic research fields of the scientists from the Faculty of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw now and the perspectives for future.

(Working with a specialised language in interpreting classes)
- Author(s):Lucyna Krenz-Brzozowska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:149-165
- No. of Pages:17
- Keywords:interpreting; cyclical progression of material; elements of specialised language; interpreter’s translational competence
- Summary/Abstract:Interpreting is not usually associated with specialist translation, although it is often practised in specialist oral communication situations. Students’ difficulties here concern not so much the memorisation and afterwards the use of specialist vocabulary during interpreting, but the linguistic correctness of the target texts in terms of general lexis, syntax and grammar, as students focus so much on the specialist vocabulary that linguistic correctness escapes them. The presented concept of specialised language work based on a cyclical progression of the degree of saturation of the translated texts with specialised terminology within the thematic issues pursued and throughout the course of the interpreting exercises shows how such problems can be effectively prevented.

- Keywords:BA project; problem-based method; project-based method; tutoring; coach; linguistics; project management
- Summary/Abstract:The dynamically changing labour market poses new challenges to educational institutions that educate professionals. The task of these institutions is to meet the demands so that educated graduates are best prepared to perform their professional duties. Therefore, the creation of Linguistics for Business, a three-year interdisciplinary bachelor’s programme of studies with a practical profile, which combines business elements with language skills, is the response of University of Lodz to market needs. Students acquire business management skills combined with the command of two modern languages: English and a second language, i.e., German, French or Russian at B2+ level that give graduates an advantage on the labour market. This article is devoted to the method of conducting a BA seminar during which BA theses are created that act as the culmination of the educational process. They are prepared in the form of practical BA projects in project groups and integrate knowledge and skills gained in various classes during the course of the studies. This innovative approach to the education of business professionals reflects modern trends in teaching: combining elements of tutoring, problem-based, project-based methods and project management. Students are tasked with defining a practical problem and solving it using scientific research methods, and developing a physical product based on the obtained results. In the process of thesis development, the seminar tutor is merely a coach, supporting the whole process, and the students choose the topic, research methods and the materials to be used in its creation. The innovative character of the Linguistics for Business bachelor’s theses is thus manifested on several levels: the interdisciplinary approach to conducting the seminar, the integration of knowledge and skills from different scientific disciplines, the way the thesis is prepared, its practical nature or even the developed product. In addition, BA theses in the form of group projects at Linguistics for Business simulate potential situations in the workplace and can therefore set new trends in the training of professionals.

- Author(s):Janusz Stopyra
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:205-222
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:word formation; comparative word formation; word formation structures; motivation; naming motive
- Summary/Abstract:The project, in its theoretical part based on the phenomenon of morphosemantic motivation in the classical sense (cf. Käge 1980), included an analysis of Polish and German word-formations. On this basis, following a new version of research that uses the concept of naming motive (e.g. Feine 1998; 1999), a model was constructed for a contrastive analysis of polymorphemic words in Polish and German in terms of motivational similarities and differences. The five naming motives in the model were used in order not only to recognize the proper motivation of a new word formation, but also to compare the motivation of referential identical word formations of Polish and German. Most of the Polish-German word pairs that were studied have, as it turned out, analogous motivation (about 94%), but the main goal of the project was to arrange German exercises for Poles based on motivational differences. Some examples of exercises arranged by students taking specialized classes at the University of Wroclaw are included in the final section of the article.

- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:225-240
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:cross-cultural transfer; marketing genre; translation of marketing texts; transcreation; adaptation; localization; copywriting
- Summary/Abstract:Marketing texts are among the most frequently translated genres. This domain of translation studies is reflected in the theory of translation of advertisements, which constitute the most studied marketing genre. However, the spectrum of these genres is broader, and the answer to the complexity of their translation is the industry’s transcreation service. Performed by specialized translators, transcreation has already entered the scientific debate, but it requires empirical research to determine its relationship with translation, localization and copywriting. The article highlights the peculiarities of translation in the marketing domain from the perspective of the industry and that of translation studies, drawing attention to the conceptual and terminological discrepancies in communication between theorists and practitioners with the aim of intensifying the mutual exchange, which is a prerequisite for the development of the discipline.

- Keywords:translation system; translation scheme; CAT tools; translation memory; computer-assisted translation
- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of the article is to examine whether the emergence of CAT (computer-assisted translation) programs requires updating the scheme of the classical translation system. The following three questions are analyzed: 1) whether these programs should be introduced into the scheme and take the place alongside the translator, 2) whether the text pre-prepared by these programs should be introduced into the scheme and take the place alongside the original text and the translation text, 3) whether the linguistic assets of these programs – that is, translation memories, glossaries, lists of forbidden translations (black lists), lists of preferred translations, lists of elements "transferred” without change from the original text to the translation text (placeables) – should be introduced into the scheme, and if so, where.

- Author(s):Alicja Pstyga
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:273-291
- No. of Pages:19
- Keywords:translation; media texts; persuasion; communicative equivalence of the texts
- Summary/Abstract:Scholars define the world presented in the media as a combination of representation and creation which take place in a complex set of conditions including the preferences, needs and competences of the receiver. This sphere also includes translated texts. In the new communication space, a translated text has usually undergone significant changes, which means that the communicative equivalence of the original text and its translation is not always maintained. An important role in shaping the translated message is also played by techniques of persuasion as various components of the translated text may exhibit suggestive potential (see Gruszczyńska 2012). Using examples of media texts in Russian and their translations into Polish, the author demonstrates that possible deviations from the original textual reality are important from the point of view of the interpretation and competence of the receiver. Translations present a special type of texts because the receiver – usually not familiar with the original text –experiences an illusion of reading it (cf. Hejwowski 2006).

Despite this, these authors achieve literary successes not only in Germany, but also in the world. This phenomenon seems interesting in itself, and even more interesting are the narratives using the topic of language acquisition by immigrants. This article aims to present a few examples of similar works and consider the question of whether they can be classified as German literature, which seems to be a problem for the language users themselves.

- No. of Pages:16
- Keywords:Russian poetry; worldview; motif; sea; Marina Tsvetaeva; metaphorization
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents a systematic analysis of the sea motif in the work of Marina Tsvetaeva. The research task is an attempt to trace how the lexeme “sea” plays a role in the meaning-generating poetic process, as well as to prove the special significance of this motif as an important feature of creative thinking, worldview and creative individuality in general. Based on extensive material (around 1070 examples) taken from poetic and prose texts, the article examines the main meanings of the sea motif and its functional features in the Tsvetaeva’s individual worldview. The sea, without losing its natural concreteness, becomes one of the important tools for metaphorizing the processes and phenomena of not only the physical, but also the spiritual world of the poet.

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:343-360
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:autobiography; comparative analysis; anthropology of memory; war memory; responsibility
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to conduct a comparative analysis of modern autobiographical works by the outstanding scholars Norman Davies’ On Himself (2019) and Franciszek Grucza’s "My Road to Anthropocentric Linguistics" (2017). Walentyna Sobol wants to put them in a broader context of the anthropology of war, which has been imprinted in children’s memory and in the works of, for example, Sławomir Mrożek (2006) or Piotr Wojciechowski (2022). The author of the article examines the factors of the timeless significance of the egodocuments of scholars, which is why she uses the research methodology of the anthropology of memory, especially the traumatic memory of a child. Another goal that the researcher tries to achieve by comparing personal documents is to present an analysis of a politically justified answer to the question concerning the participation of a humanities scholar in counteracting cruelty, humiliation and violence. Here, the tasks for humanists, precisely formulated in the work "My Way to Anthropocentric Linguistics", stand out. The author’s well-thought-out announcements correspond to Ryszard Nycz’s concern about the fate of the humanities and humanists, expressed in his article "New Humanities in Poland: Some Very Subjective Observations, Conjectures, Refutations" (2017). The article justifies the conclusions about the most important, in the author’s opinion, timeless discourses.
