Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to present the role of local government units in the context of health-oriented attitudes of their residents on the example of alcohol policy. Alcohol consumption by Poles continues to rise and remains above the European average. The amendment to the Act on Upbringing in Sobriety and Counteracting Alcoholism in 2018 introduced a number of additional powers for local governments that enable effective shaping of local alcohol policy. The largest beneficiaries are councils, which may impose restrictions on access to alcohol. The novelty will now be available to local governments through the reports of the Staszic Institute from 2019 and the report of the Supreme Audit Office. These documents show difficulties that actually hinder the effective implementation of municipal prevention programs.
