Summary/Abstract: From the sociolinguistic approach, which focuses on language as social action, the juxtaposition of the linguist and the layperson cannot be maintained since language-based social action involves everyone. Put it differently, everyone who speaks or signs or writes has language expertise. If we want to understand language as social action and the knowledge that is inseparable from it, it is necessary to include in these linguistic processes of understanding those whose actions and knowledge we are accounting for; in other words, those without whose participation there could be no common and mutual understanding – a condition for the social impact of linguistics. In my study, I will show how we achieved the involvement of non-linguists in a participatory linguistic research project, the aims of which we defined together. My data comes from fieldwork diaries written individually and collaboratively. Based on these, I argue that our task as linguists is to create the frameworks in which the language-related and linguistic expertise of non-linguists and linguists can be shaped in joint action and at the same time can lead to the emergence of new knowledge.
