Summary/Abstract: This volume contains the selected presentations that were given at the conferences entitled Languages and Intercultural Mediation after the Digital Revolution – the Challenges of the 21st Century and Shaping Humanities: Innovation, Tradition, and Value Creation organized in 2019 and in 2022.The two events are the continuation of the conference series started in 2011 with the intention of creating a tradition, thus being the fifth and sixth editions of the series (TRANSL-LINGUISTICA V and VI).We consider that these two events are a watershed in the history of our conference series in all respects: the fifth edition took place in the year before the pandemic while the sixth in the year when the pandemic eased, the former thus enriched the series of traditional conferences, the latter took place online due to the restrictions that still were applied in some places around the world.

- Summary/Abstract:From the sociolinguistic approach, which focuses on language as social action, the juxtaposition of the linguist and the layperson cannot be maintained since language-based social action involves everyone. Put it differently, everyone who speaks or signs or writes has language expertise. If we want to understand language as social action and the knowledge that is inseparable from it, it is necessary to include in these linguistic processes of understanding those whose actions and knowledge we are accounting for; in other words, those without whose participation there could be no common and mutual understanding – a condition for the social impact of linguistics. In my study, I will show how we achieved the involvement of non-linguists in a participatory linguistic research project, the aims of which we defined together. My data comes from fieldwork diaries written individually and collaboratively. Based on these, I argue that our task as linguists is to create the frameworks in which the language-related and linguistic expertise of non-linguists and linguists can be shaped in joint action and at the same time can lead to the emergence of new knowledge.

- Summary/Abstract:The study describes the complexity of the linguistic repertoire of local native speakers of Hungarian, based on interviews conducted in recent years in villages situated in the Transylvanian Plain. The analyses indicate that the linguistic repertoire of the dialect speakers is – contrary to the earlier homogeneous view – diverse, varied, and far from homogeneous. In addition to the influence of Hungarian–Romanian bilingualism (sometimes Romanian-dominant bilingualism) and the contact phenomena that go with it, the interviewees’ utterances show the use of traditional and newer varieties of the dialect, including elements of the second language, the appearance of preserved lexical archaisms, and specific dialectal neologisms. The use of specific grammatical and lexical forms can be interpreted partly as a contact phenomenon and partly as a dialectal feature, indicating that the speaker’s verbal repertoire functions as a unified whole, despite the verbal competence based on a variety of linguistic influences. The results also show that boundary areas of regional language varieties are not always clear and distinct, and the local Hungarian-language communication often shows symptoms of linguistic uncertainty and language deficiency.

- Summary/Abstract:The research aims at analysing the semiotic landscape of a Hungarian-owned business in a bilingual region of Szeklerland and seeks to answer the question of what identity-constructing resources the business creates, what local/Szekler/ethnic elements and attributes it can incorporate into its brand identity in order to be marketable. The elements of the landscape can be evaluated as semiotic resources, and these semiotic resources can be related to the five senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste), such as the smell of smoked meat products, the melody of the Szekler folk song, the taste of fresh horned bread, and other Szekler symbols that can attract customers. These elements, in a given constellation, trigger a meaning-making process and encourage consumer participation. As semiotic assemblages, the constellations have an impact on potential customers. Although the analysis of the semiotic landscape must necessarily include the analysis of the linguistic elements, semiotic elements as part of marketing messages can be constructed and used by businesses to emphasize locality and ethnicity and to persuade consumers, in addition to linguistic cues.

- Summary/Abstract:New discoveries and scientific results are often published in articles written in a world language, for example, English. Hence, there is a significant need to translate academic texts into or from English. Translator trainees need to become acquainted with the field of academic writing mainly because of two reasons: as students, they have to write a paper in academic style for their state examination, and as future translators they may have the opportunity to translate scientific texts. Academic writing can be challenging in several ways, as it requires the use of a standardized, normative language. In our study, we examine the performance of a group of translator trainees in order to assess their awareness of the characteristics of academic texts and their ability to write in academic style. Eventual problems and difficulties should be addressed in the further development of the curriculum.

- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of this study is to show how the platforms provided by social media affect the work of translators and what their impact is on the development of the translation society. After a brief presentation of the information revolution, the role of the media sphere and social media will be discussed, and then the impact of the latter on the professional life of the practitioners of each profession will be examined. Just as in the case of other professions, the emergence of social media played an important role in the translation profession. Social media has greatly influenced the development of professional communication and has also transformed the framework of professional cooperation. Our goal is to examine what phenomena can be observed in relation to the everyday work of translators based on the activities of the professional groups operating on Facebook. We take a close look at what types of posts the members of Facebook professional groups publish and to what extent these posts shape the way the profession is practised.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present the terminological challenges of the project initialized by the Romanian Institute for Research on National Minorities in Cluj-Napoca, the scope of which was the translation of the Romanian official forms used in the public administration into Hungarian. The glossary on which the study is based is a part of the above-mentioned project conducted in 2021, in which the author of this paper was invited by the project initiator as a translator and as a terminologist. The aim of the study is to present from the translator’s point of view the linguistic aspects of terminological work conducted prior to the translation and to highlight the major difficulties that occurred during the elaboration of the glossary.

- Summary/Abstract:Since press translation is very different from all other translations, and in the translation of some media genres the translator makes large-scale changes or complete transformations to the information content of the news text, omitting information, inserting others, changing the title, or even changing the perspective, which can sometimes completely reorganize the communicative structure of the target-language-text sentences, the question arises as to how, in the case of translation, the semantic structuring of the original text affects the structuring of the translated text, whether the current structuring patterns are transferable from one language to another, or what justifies the difference, and if so, what effect it has on the content, whether it causes a change in the event structure.Taking the above into account, in the present paper we investigate the current tagging of news texts randomly selected from a corpus collected at the same point in time and the role of topic–topic structure in organizing the text. The common feature of the text samples is that they are summaries and abridged transcriptions of texts translated into Hungarian or news articles.

- Summary/Abstract:Starting from March 2020, we were faced with an educational practice, which, on the one hand, required a high level of creativity on the part of educators and, on the other hand, tested the adaptability of teachers and students as well as the previous working practices. This study aims to find answers to the question of how and what the new work order has changed in the learning and teaching practices of the Applied Linguistics Department of the Faculty of Technical and Human Sciences Târgu-Mureş, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania. We also use the results of a questionnaire survey to answer the questions and draw conclusions.

- Summary/Abstract:The term ‘super-diversity’ is used to describe the phenomena of globally expanding mobility, which entail new and increasingly complex social formations and networking practices (Busch 2012). This new approach of sociolinguistics studies languages and language varieties within the background of linguistic resources, attitudes, repertoires, and discourses. Super-diversity in the digital world refers to the linguistic repertoires in publicly accessible digital spaces on the Internet, where social media users creatively adopt and use linguistic resources. The study investigates linguistic repertoire in public Facebook profiles by analysing the language choice of research participants. The research focuses on multilingualism reflected in online social media users’ linguistic repertoire: how Hungarian minority speakers, students of Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania in Romania draw upon their linguistic repertoires in order to maximize the effectiveness and functionality of their online communication.

- Summary/Abstract:With artificial intelligence and deep learning gaining ground, the last few years have seen an unprecedented development in Machine Translation (MT). Deep learning, neural machine translation, and large language models have opened up horizons that many did not think possible. This era of automated translation has led to a restructuring of the profession of translation and the processes carried out by human translators in target-language text production. Technological advances in the case of some languages make the role of translator seem obsolete, and many have expressed concerns about their livelihoods. Our paper discusses the attitudes and opinions of Hungarian professional translators regarding the development of automated translation. We focused our research on a Hungarian Facebook group, an online platform for professional translators, where they can ask for help and discuss aspects of their work. We show that many Hungarian professionals express reservations about MT replacing human translators, arguing that Hungarian is a “small” language that is “very different” (mostly from a structural point of view) from the “big” languages that MT targets.

- Summary/Abstract:The revolution of technology resulted in changes concerning translation as well. Since the second half of the 20th century, there has been a considerable growth in the field of translation, and thus we can talk about a fully-fledged translation industry. However, while (qualified or certified) members of various professional translator associations struggle to respect a code of ethics of their own, a vast number of amateur, illegal, part-time, or occasional translators make considerable profit by neglecting codes regarding customers, texts, fellow translators, or the self. The article discusses the validity and range of the code of ethics for translators in the 21st century, hallmarked by the strengthening of free online translation services and an ever-increasing number of amateur translators involved especially in the audio-visual translation industry as the ancillary service of the entertainment industry.

- Summary/Abstract:Among reference works, dictionaries are particularly important in foreign language learning. Dictionaries provide language learners with a wide range of knowledge; however, wading through the mass of information can be a daunting task. Mastery of the dictionary should be an important part of language skills, yet in official educational documents (in Hungary), there are no clear guidelines on how to develop these skills. By integrating dictionary skills into the curriculum and teaching them explicitly in lessons, teachers could play an important role in bridging the gap between lexicographers and dictionary users. In the present study, the writer reports on her methods of teaching lexicography (at a Hungarian university) as well as dictionary skills to university students. The author speaks from experience: the discussion and accompanying material are based on more than 15 years of teaching practice. The aims of the paper are twofold: first, to encourage the teaching of lexicography at the university level by providing concrete methods and then to highlight the importance of dictionary skills.

- Summary/Abstract:The use of repetition in Hamlet has been repeatedly remarked upon and discussed in seminal studies such as Frank Kermode’s (2001), which refers to Hamlet as a play “whose language is full of doubles, antitheses and repetitions” (Kermode 2001: 127). Considering the fact that doubling and trebling appears to be a characteristic of the language of Hamlet, the present paper endeavours to look at instances of repetition and parallelism in the exchanges between Old Hamlet and Young Hamlet with a view to tracing influences in translation from a retranslation theorist’s point of view. We have chosen these exchanges because they are rife with repetition and because repetition is used to enrich and reinforce the semantics of the source text. Based on a corpus of nine Romanian target texts, the article analyses strategies in translation as devised by Ben-Ari (1998) and highlights the crucial role that the rendering of these figures plays in “successful” retranslations of Shakespeare’s play. We conclude that the main strategies employed in the Romanian target texts are partial equivalence and omission.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper looks into a “translinguistic” manifestation in computer-mediated communication: the presence in written discourse of an iconoid1 composite, the graphicon, an entity, encompassing forms such as emoji, stickers, GIFs, memes, etc. The textual intercourse in digital communication is intertwined with such iconized objects, gaining new meanings and functions, crossing linguistic and cultural borders. They are part of the online culture and specifically part of the communicative skills in digital environment. Despite the fact that the above-mentioned visual representations have a relatively short presence in human communication, it is noticeable that they have already demonstrated a rather rapid and rich variation development.The current work examines the nature of the graphicon as revealed by its ability to be part of the computer-mediated discourse in various linguistic environments. Two different linguistic approaches are employed for analysing the usage of the iconoid composites in attempt to point at their nature as parameters of language in terms of interfering in the linguistic codes.

- Summary/Abstract:The analysis of scientific discourse in general is a particularly complex process, given the multitude of research trends in the field: philosophy of language, pragmatics of discourse, linguistics of text, ethnomethodology, etc. The perspectives of analysis (rhetorical, philological) differ from one researcher to another. There are two assumptions from which we start. Our study proposes an applied analysis of focus in the utterance (with application to medical discourse). The investigation of the contextual conditionings of focus, typology, specific marks of focus are just some of the aspects subject to analysis, from a philological perspective.

- Summary/Abstract:The COVID-19 epidemic is, from a linguistic point of view, a new referent that has led to the emergence of new concepts and lexemes. Our study analyses the lexicalization processes and semantic changes generated by the COVID-19 epidemic within the Romanian language, based on a corpus built from the material published on official governmental websites online as well as from the lexical content of dictionaries dedicated to the terms generated by the pandemic, which can be found on the Internet and which aim to clarify the meaning of some terms. We do not want to make a quantitative analysis, as the corpus is still under construction, just as the pandemic is still evolving. We analyse the changes and the most notable lexical and semantic phenomena that manifest themselves in this Romanian COVID vocabulary, including terminologization, compounding, conversion, etc. These varied techniques of word formation that favoured the processes of lexicalization and the creation of neologisms reveal an impressive linguistic dynamic at the level of the Romanian public discourse related to pandemics, which, however, is modelled on similar processes occurring in the English language, from which the Romanian pandemic terminology has taken over quite a lot, through borrowing and calque.

- Summary/Abstract:In this study, we aim to address the concept of linguistic repertoire in language teaching. We do so with a view to identifying the main paradigm shifts that have taken place over time in terms of attitudes towards concepts such as linguistic repertoire, linguistic competence, correctness, and error, bearing in mind that the linguistic repertoire model is making an ever-growing career in current sociolinguistics, with repercussions on proximate areas such as language-teaching didactics and/or methodology.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper presents the use of the computer program Tropes V 8, developed by Semantic-Knowledge in the preparatory stages of the translation of written texts and speeches and in the comparative analysis of translated texts. Our approach takes on elements of contrastive linguistics applied in the translation process. Thus, we try to determine the usefulness of this program in the process of computer-assisted translation for didactic purposes, following the two aforementioned stages, the preparation and the evaluation of translation.

- Summary/Abstract:Starting from the term “transdisciplinarity”, launched by Jean Piaget and revitalized by Basarab Nicolescu – in the sense originally intended, by emphasizing the meaning of “beyond”, in addition to the “between” and the “in” of the Latin prefix “trans-” –, our paper attempts to illustrate the induction of the false Manichean perception of the science–religion dichotomy, a perception which is, in our opinion, at the root of the current problems of mankind. In this sense, after a historical overview of the concept of transdisciplinarity, as the crowning of interdisciplinarity, using Nicolesco’s concept of “the hidden third” and some examples from the poetry of Mihai Eminescu, we try to reveal how the “weak” offspring of Science (including Philology) – seen from the perspective of scientism as a doctrine of epistemology – could reinvigorate the increasingly dense but at the same time arid field of knowledge.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper tries to explain how the smaller languages react to the influx of technical terms and how the terminology work in these languages is carried out in the age of digitalization. A particular focus is laid on the Scandinavian languages. In every Scandinavian country, there is a language authority, a language council, or a language committee. They were founded for different reasons and to accomplish different tasks. In the age of digitalization, their collaboration has increased. Iceland does not have its own specialized terminology group or terminology centre, and Icelandic faces certain obstacles in dealing with new technology, but the terminology work is excellent.

- Summary/Abstract:This article provides a historical overview of the terminology work in the two insular Scandinavian languages, Icelandic and Faroese, and also presents how these languages deal with technical terms today. Similarities and differences are identified and an attempt is made to explain their strong reluctance in using foreign words, which often leads them to completely avoid specialized terminology. As a literary language, Faroese emerged relatively late in the second half of the 19th century, while Icelandic – earlier than any other Scandinavian language – was already a fully developed literary medium in the Middle Ages. However, due to Danish dominance, Icelandic was considered as a potentially endangered language at the beginning of the 19th century by the famous Danish linguist Rasmus Rask. In the 20th century, Icelandic became a fully developed and stable language. Since these are small languages, one would expect them to primarily borrow and adopt technical terminology, something characteristic for languages of this type. But this only applies to Faroese, and only partially, and not at all to Icelandic. However, here we are dealing with two conservative languages that are characterized by strong purist orientations that have left their mark, something that leads them to show resistance and aversion to foreign words and, in most cases, to reject them. Icelandic in particular has always preferred the implementation of purist solutions such as: the orðsmídi, the coinage of new words to denote new concepts, phenomena, and the replacement of existing unsuitable loanwords. Ideologies such as the hreintungustefna and the nýyrđastefna have also strengthened purism and weakened the tendency to adopt foreign words. In addition, Icelandic is now considered the most purist language in the world. The various methods and strategies for overcoming the obstacles and difficulties of the new technology have produced such results that their terminology work can be considered outstanding.

- Summary/Abstract:The article aims to identify and categorize the linguistic metaphors in the German political media discourse regarding the war in Ukraine on the basis of selected press texts. The following questions were answered: Which metaphors are used to illustrate the Ukraine war in the German political and media discourse? Is the assumption correct that fewer war metaphors are used for the description of the war than for depicting the COVID-19 crisis (which was still current at the time the article was written)? The study is based on an official government statement by the German Chancellor and several talk programmes and podcasts dealing with the situation that arose after the attack on Ukraine. A list of examples for metaphors were selected from these sources and are presented and categorized in this article.
