Summary/Abstract: For the patient, illness is not merely a physical condition, but also a psychological challenge and a disturbance of the soul. The more severe the illness is, the more the concept of care evolves, in order to encompass not only the medical treatment, but also the management of the negative emotional states generated by the disease. These emotional states can be experienced by both patient and his family members, leading to an expanded concept of care that includes not only the patient, but also their family. The family plays a fundamental role in healing or coping with the illness by supporting and caring for the patient. The spiritual approach of the illness takes on specific nuances depending on the type of illness and whether the patient practices a religion or receives spiritual assistance. Often, receiving or asking for spiritual assistance aligns with the patient’s pre-existing spiritual concerns or arises after the experience of illness, which may spark, for the first time, an interest in the spiritual dimension of life. The purpose of this paper is to theoretically analyze the role of the priest within the multidisciplinary healthcare team in providing psycho-spiritual support to patients and their families.
