Summary/Abstract: Vaccination is recognized as one of the most successful preventive public health interventions, offering numerous benefits to both individual and societal health and well-being. Beyond the widely acknowledged health impacts, vaccination also yields significant social and economic benefits, as substantiated by extensive scientific research. However, vaccines and vaccination programs do not always receive public support, and recent years have witnessed a surge in vaccine hesitancy and distrust. This report will briefly trace the history of the smallpox vaccine, from its discovery to the successful eradication of the disease. It will examine the spread of the disease in Bulgaria, the measures implemented, and the legislation enacted that contributed to its eradication. The report aims to recall the success of vaccination policies, using the eradication of smallpox as an example, and to emphasize the need to restore and reinforce public trust in vaccines.
