Summary/Abstract: This volume contains papers from a scientific conference held on 29 April 2025, dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Economic Sociology at the University of National and World Economy. A special place is devoted to the relationship between sociological science and economics, as well as to the possibilities of applying an interdisciplinary approach to the study of current development problems. The second thematic focus concerns the role of institutions and public policies in achieving economic and social progress in the context of global transformations. It is in such a context that topics related to economic education and training, changes in the world of work, and the governance of business organizations are addressed. The collection of papers also covers other topics traditionally among the objects of study in economic sociology, such as the criminal economy, violence, migration, health and quality of life. Containing an impressive total of 105 papers, the collection will be of interest to a wide audience - academics, researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and anyone intellectually engaged with the complex interplay between social and economic phenomena and processes. Last but not least, more than 40 of the papers included in the collection are by undergraduate and postgraduate students - an expression of the principle of continuity between the past, the present and the future.

- Summary/Abstract:In today‘s world, dominated by digital technologies, algorithmic governance, and global economic interdependencies, economic sociology faces new challenges. As Carl Sagan warns in The Demon-Haunted World, the lack o f critical thinking leads to the spread o f pseudoscientific ideas and social misconceptions, and only the scientific approach can dispel the darkness in which the demons of falsehood thrive. Similarly, economic sociology can serve as a „candle in the dark“ (Sagan, 2023), revealing the hidden mechanisms o f economic power, algorithmic control, and growing social inequalities. In this context, the concept o f Economic Sociology 5.0 emerges – an approach that builds upon previous stages o f development and integrates new forms of economic and social interaction. This article will analyze the Bulgarian perspective on economic sociology ten years ago and today, posing the question: How can economic sociology counteract the „economic demons“ o f modernity - the falsehoods o f neoliberal myths, algorithmic discrimination, and an economy based on exploitation - through a critical perspective on the future?

- Page Range:242-253
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:social systems; converted forms; pictures of visibility
- Summary/Abstract:The main thesis o f the paper is that the concept of ‘sociological system’ (a cornerstone in Bulgarian sociology in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s) could significantly increase its potential if we connect it with the Marxian idea, as developed by Merab Mamardashvili, of converted forms as a mechanism of the functioning of social systems as ‘systems with consciousness’. In that case, however, social systems should not be viewed as pre-given but as constructed by effects of the figuration of appearances, visibilities and pictures of visibility through which they are perceived and reproduced.

- Keywords:sociology; security; social network
- Summary/Abstract:The report examines the new moments in the security paradigm from a sociological perspective. The main thesis is related to the unsatisfactory understanding of security as military or intelligence security. Quite the opposite: tanks, planes and drones no longer mean security. The negative sides of new social phenomena such as social networks, fake news, the use o f artificial intelligence redefine the concept o f security. The thesis is defended that a new security paradigm is needed, reflecting new social realities. The way out, according to the author, is a social action related to the refrain „back to nature“ (of man), if we use the French Enlightenment.

- Summary/Abstract:In modern society, the exercise of labor is a central key to inclusion and belonging to society. Through labor, all those goods are produced – goods and services that people cannot obtain in a ready-made form from nature. In this sense, labor is a forced activity for society. The report focuses on the market, as the main institution that organizes forced labor. Special attention is paid to the immigration of market logic into areas and institutions outside the economy of society.

- Keywords:decent work; social exclusion; exclusionary employment; precarious employment
- Summary/Abstract:This paper aims to track the prevalence of so-called "exclusionary employment" and to assess the impact of important elements of working conditions and organisation of work on the likelihood of those in paid employment falling into such a condition. Using data from the 10th round of the European Social Survey, the paper presents evidence that nearly 36% of employees are in a state of "exclusionary employment", with the biggest contributor being excessive job demands requiring too much physical, mental and emotional effort. Something like this impedes the possibility of recovering the workforce and achieving a satisfying time outside paid work. One of the reasons for the emergence of such imbalances is the weakened bargaining potential in organisations, which hinders the ability of employees to participate in the decision making process and to have their interests taken into account when adapting working conditions and organisation of work to changing realities

- Keywords:changes in the world; center of world trade; nuclear war
- Summary/Abstract:The probability of Trump‘s victory sharply reducing the probability of the nuclear phase of the current Third World War is analyzed. The changes in the world during Biden‘s term are examined. Also – what is the continuity, on the one hand, and the new moments in the political strategies of Trump himself, on the other hand? What deeper motives and goals lie behind these specific policies? It is shown that on the one hand, the probability of nuclear war decreases as a result of Trump‘s victory. But on the other hand – the probability appears that European countries will fully bear the costs and military actions against Russia, without the participation of the United States. It becomes possible for the two rivals for the center of world trade, global power centers, to make a deal to the detriment of Europe and Russia. The destruction of humanity is postponed. But at the expense of Europe and Russia.

- Keywords:segregation; Roma; water; water supply; racialization; neoliberalism
- Summary/Abstract:Since 1989, Bulgaria has been undergoing rapid economic restructuring, affecting urban governance and the equitable distribution of resources. In Sliven, the mass closure of factories and the layoff of Roma workers accelerated the processes of spatial segregation and ghettoization, thus creating racialized poverty. The water sector also suffers from chronic underinvestment, which often leads to water supply interruptions in the city. The Roma from the Nadezhda district are considered guilty of the accumulated economic losses of the Sliven Water and Sewerage Company by the institutions, which become scapegoats for the structural problems. At the same time the interests of the business trump the needs of the population for drinking water. As a result, the water supply in the district is interrupted every night. This situation raises questions about how the marginalized urban population can resist and demand access to basic rights such as the right to water. In addition to the tactics of the locals, the report also draws attention to the other, institutional side – what oppressive practices the authorities use. The theoretical framework of infrapolitics, conceived by James Scott, situates the low-intensity actions and gestures of subordinate groups in the context of collective political action and helps to illustrate how Roma in Nadezhda act politically. This is considered against the backdrop of how water governance reconfigures social relations and governance structures, using the prism of the hydrosocial cycle of water.

- Summary/Abstract:Climate change and environmental pollution are an undeniable fact and the global community is making significant efforts to combat them. International binding treaties are adopted, requiring a number of changes in the fields of energy, transport, industry, but also in the consumption and everyday life of people. The most significant impact on Bulgaria has the package of policies adopted by the European Union, known as the Green Deal. The text discusses public attitudes in Bulgaria towards climate issues and the country‘s commitments, described as a green transition. Based on data from a nationally representative survey, some of the existing problems and points of tension in the country related to the changes imposed by the Green Deal are identified. It is concluded that only in recent months an opportunity to coordinate the positions of politicians and society appears towards implementing a smoother green transition, considering the consequences not only from ecology point of view, but also from that of the economy, the social sphere and security.

- Keywords:social impact assessment; public development policies; industrial policies; partnership; civil society
- Summary/Abstract:The partnership in social impact assessment of industrial policies is a process of consultation with stakeholders interested in a specific policy. Partnership and SIA evolve alongside the evolution of state and follows the increasing role of civil society. Partnership in the process of creation, implementation, and evaluation of development policies is one of the examples of this process. Industrial policies offer a good opportunity for analyzing partnership. The Operational Programme „Innovations and Competitiveness 2014-2020“ (OPIC), which is a systematically developed and financially covered industrial development policy, is the most suitable for this purpose. It is the primary vehicle for Bulgaria’s industrial policy, as it is dominant and, in many sectors, the sole source of funding for industrial development policies. The SIA of policies implemented under OPIC is an opportunity that has not yet been fully utilized, which, to some extent, prevents the full exploitation of the advantages of partnership.

- Keywords:energy policy; energy transition; industrial transformation; competitiveness; national interests
- Summary/Abstract:The energy transition is a historical process in which new energy sources are being used. However, old and new energy sources will coexist for a long time under the current global trend of industrial transformation. Haste by refusing to develop and use old sources such as coal, natural gas and nuclear energy, before the guaranting of the development of safe, sustainable and reliable new energy sources, leads to reduced competitiveness and deindustrialization, due to the lack of cheap and reliable energy resources. The common energy policy of the EU does not take into account the specificities of the energy sectors, the different climatic conditions and the level of industrial development of the member states from Eastern and Southern Europe. The main problem in the Bulgarian energy policy is the lack of proper definition of national interests in energy.

- Page Range:509-519
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:food; agriculture
- Summary/Abstract:Every community and people are culturally and historically connected to food. Faith, religion, health and longevity of the nation are also connected to food. Religions around the world oblige what food believers should consume, when to abstain from certain foods and when not. Food and people‘s health are connected to labor, which is a major production factor. In the 19th century, agriculture was not mechanized and production in this sector directly depended on people‘s labor. Bulgarian food is diverse, and Orthodoxy allows the use of all types of food throughout the year, unlike other religions that impose absolute abstinence from certain foods. The purpose of the article is to present the food of Bulgarians in the second half of the 19th century, when the Third Bulgarian State was created. The main thesis of the report is that this was a period of flourishing Bulgarian agriculture and an abundance of food products. For the needs of the study, an interdisciplinary approach was used, using sources from the visual arts, fiction, archival documents and scientific research.

- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:state regulation; inflation; food; economic effects; market mechanisms
- Summary/Abstract:In recent years, the issue of rising food prices has become one of the most significant socio-economic issues. Global supply chains, inflationary pressures, rising production costs and geopolitical crises contribute to price volatility, posing serious challenges to consumers, businesses and governments. In response to the rising cost of living and societal pressures, many countries, including Bulgaria, have begun to discuss or implement measures to contain prices through government regulation. Although such interventions are often presented as a mechanism to protect households from speculative price gouging and social inequality, economists warn that they can lead to deficits, a decline in investment and distortions in the competitive balance of the market. This article will analyse the main factors leading to food price rises, the role of the state in price regulation and the potential effects of such measures on the economy, consumers and retailers. Is it possible for the state to effectively control prices without negative consequences, or does the free market remain the best mechanism to regulate the value of goods?

- Keywords:democracy; values; youth inclusion; European Union
- Summary/Abstract:The report focuses on the inclusion of children and youth in decision-making on topics that affect them. The analysis of the data through the lens of the polarities of democracy theory reveals structural social shortages that do not favor the establishment of practices for the full participation of young people in Bulgaria in decision-making processes on topics that are important to them. The article provides arguments in support of the thesis that access to more reliable information is a necessary, but not a sufficient prerequisite for real empowerment of young people. Furthermore, it is necessary to institutionalize a structured social environment – stable enough to allow predictability and continuity, but also flexible enough to allow adaptability and development – that can channel the (proto)civic energy of children and youth in Bulgaria.

- Summary/Abstract:The text discusses the financing of the Internal Revolutionary Organisation founded by Levski. The financial sources, the accounting documentation, the reasons that led to the revolutionary terror are indicated. Levski was the first to realize the idea that the Bulgarian people should not wait for their liberation from outside, but should win it for themselves by rising up in a general uprising. The aim was to liberate Bulgaria through „a moral revolution and with arms.“ For him, only a well-organized and prepared revolution has the sense and chance to succeed. And only such a liberation movement would preserve Bulgaria from foreign encroachments and make us masters of our destiny.

- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:public policies; healthcare; medicines
- Summary/Abstract:The report presents an analysis of data on child healthcare from the National Institute of Statistics, the National Health Insurance Fund, the National Institute of Health Insurance, Eurostat and an empirical study by the LARGO association, focused on the topic of free medicines for children. The analysis reveals that children are (no longer) a consensus value in Bulgarian society. Last year, the National Health Insurance Fund paid out 16 million leva on the main clinical pathways for children‘s hospitalizations, and parents made private investments of over 1 billion leva for medicines for Bulgaria‘s children. On average, a parent in our country pays 562.32 leva just for medicines per child per year, according to the study data. Every second parent finds it difficult to cover the costs of their child‘s medicines. However, public opinion in our country is strongly divided on the topic of free medicines for children due to the levels of distrust in our society, doubts about corruption and lobbying, anti-vaccination attitudes, and the normalization of public speaking from the standpoint of racism and xenophobia.

- Author(s):Dragomir Draganov
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Social Sciences, Education, Sociology, Higher Education , Evaluation research, Sociology of Education
- Page Range:600-610
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:scientific reasoning; higher education; skepticism towards science; science denial
- Summary/Abstract:This paper focuses on the extent to which higher education in Bulgaria contributes to the formation of the so-called „capacity for scientific reasoning“ and hence to trust in the scientific method and institutionalized science. It is assumed that trust in scientists is an indirect measure of the quality of higher education, insofar as one of the main functions of higher education is to develop science and scientific thinking, which in turn leads to the development of positive attitudes towards the application of the rules of the scientific method to real-world situations and positive attitudes about the role of scientists in society. Using data from the 10th wave of the European Social Survey for Bulgaria, it is demonstrated that the positive role of higher education is not as pronounced as in other countries and that there are preconditions for even questioning it. This raises a number of unresolved questions for the higher education system in the country, but most of all for the role of academics themselves.

- Summary/Abstract:In today‘s dynamic and digitalized world, fostering critical thinking in young people is one of the most essential tasks of the educational system. It is no longer enough for children to memorize facts – they need to understand, reason, and learn to evaluate the information they encounter. The educational environment, functioning as a microcosm of society, shapes not only knowledge but also attitudes, behaviors, and skills for dealing with real-life situations. It should become a space where students not only acquire knowledge but also learn to ask questions, search for meaning, and defend their positions. However, this requires a different approach, more flexible methods, and a clear vision for developing thinking individuals. Education, in this sense, is not only a tool for knowledge but also a resource for shaping independent people who can navigate the complexity of the modern world and take responsibility for their own choices.

- Keywords:dissertation activity; academic reform,; sociology; scientific degree; public defense
- Summary/Abstract:The text analyses the dissertation activity within professional field 3.1 „Sociology, Anthropology, and Cultural Sciences“ in Bulgaria over the last several decades. A primary focus is placed on changes in academic legislation and their impact on the management and conduct of dissertation defenses following the dissolution of the Higher Attestation Commission (HAC) in 2010 and the transfer of these functions to individual higher education institutions and scientific institutes. The subject of the study are the quantitative aspects of dissertation activity in the country. The research does not attempt to analyse the preferred issues in the research work of sociologists in the country, nor the quality of their work, which can be noted as limitations of the study. The research is based on a quantitative analysis of administrative data on successfully defended dissertations in professional field 3.1 „Sociology, Anthropology, and Cultural Sciences“ for two periods: 1991 – 2010, when dissertations were defended in front of HAC; and 2011 – 2024, when with the amendments introduced in the Higher Education Act, HAC was closed and the right of defense was transferred to other educational units. The data are taken from the National Register of Academic Staff and the defended dissertations at the National Centre for Information and Documentation (NACID). The analysis reveals an increase in the number of defended doctoral dissertations following the legislative changes, highlighting a successful adaptation to the new regulatory framework. Additionally, attention is paid to the distribution of defended dissertations across scientific units and the activity of academic supervisors and jury members. There is significant engagement from certain academic supervisors and jury members, indicating a substantial influence by a small number of individuals in the process. On the other hand, the participation of external specialists in the evaluation committees facilitates inter-institutional collaboration and the exchange of scientific expertise.

The analysis relies on data from the National Register of Academic Staff (NACID). Results indicate that the legislative changes of 2010 substantially reduced the time required for scholars to occupy academic positions, particularly among men and those employed at universities. The study also reveals significant gender disparities – women generally take longer to advance academically than men. Statistical data highlight clear differences between universities and research institutions, indicating that university-affiliated researchers achieve career progression more rapidly after legislative amendments.

Although rational arguments are important, emotions often take the lead. Recent studies show that consumers trust recommendations and respond to emotional content. Ethical use of these techniques is essential.

- Page Range:1023-1033
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:sociology; prostitution; social structure; family
- Summary/Abstract:The text considers prostitution as a social phenomenon that requires sociological understanding and analysis. This statement stems from the social embeddedness of prostitution in the social structure and human relationships, regardless of the historical and socio-economic stage of their development. The report presents a summary of various sociological interpretations of the phenomenon under study – some of them view it as an expression of the commodification of human relationships and considering people as means in the capitalist system; others define it as structurally inseparable from the institution of marriage; still others draw attention to contemporary transformations in economic and cultural life, which have led to a change in the meaning that people attach to intimate relationships. Regardless of the prism through which prostitution is interpreted, it cannot be denied that today it has significantly increased in scale, has become a profitable industry and has significant economic and social importance. All this requires an analysis of various aspects (moral, legal, social, criminological) and opens up a field for the development not only of a sociology of prostitution, but also for the inclusion of the topic in a broader public and expert debate.

- Keywords:Peter Stumpp; XVI century; social construction of crime; werewolf; serial мurders
- Summary/Abstract:This text reconstructs the events leading up to the brutal execution of the German peasant Peter Stumpp, accused of making a pact with the devil and, in the guise of a wolf, committing a series of gruesome murders between 1564 and 1589 in the vicinity of Cologne. Using available sources, it presents details about the convicted man, his modus operandi, the type of victims, and other aspects to reveal a realistic crime, stripped of supernatural elements and understandable by today‘s standards of credibility. The aim is to challenge those theoretical approaches that reduce the explanation of the „witch hunts “ in the pre-modern and early modern period to a mere tool of social control. By reassessing the perspective of the prosecution, we seek to demonstrate that such seemingly fantastical trials could serve an important function—protecting society from the threat of inhuman, bestial cruelty. In the socially constructed reality of the 16th century, the „Peter Stumpp“ case provided contemporaries with as legitimate an explanation of the world as the logical frameworks of rational science do for us today.

- Summary/Abstract:The topic of violence against girls and women has become increasingly relevant in the last few years. In modern relations, despite the desire for equality between women and men, the patriarchal notion of the existence of family relations continues to prevail in Bulgaria. This largely implies the dominance of the male part of the family community. Along with this, there is another problem related to violence among adolescent girls themselves. It is a kind of reflection of social relations, which are part of the overall reality in our society. This is the example that comes from the family, the street, the parliamentary rostrum, the speeches of politicians, the excessive influence of social networks, etc. The leading word here is violence.

- Keywords:migrants; refugees; Bulgaria; public attitudes; media analysis
- Summary/Abstract:Social researchers have long focused their attention on studying the factors that influence public attitudes towards migrants and have revealed that an accurate understanding of the social context of the host country is of fundamental importance for the success of reception and integration policies. Public opinion towards migrants, whether negative or positive, does not depend on existing regulations, but influences the success of integration processes, which is why its analysis in traditional and social media is of special interest. The analysis of information from the media analysis points to two types of negative images of migrants – a young man coming from the Middle East illegally and committing crimes, who presents himself as a „refugee“, but is actually an invader intent on taking over European territory, and the rich Ukrainian, who came on vacation to escape military turmoil and mobilization, doing shady business and benefiting from the funds provided by the taxpayers of Bulgaria and the European Union (EU).

- Keywords:irregular migration; smugglers; trends; challenges; Republic of Bulgaria
- Summary/Abstract:Global instability caused by political crisis, military conflicts, low levels of economic and social security, climate change are just some of the factors increasing international migration. Pressed by the urgent need to leave their usual location, migrants sometimes choose to rush in search of better living conditions, without taking into account the established rules and norms for entering the territory of a foreign country. This in turn opens a niche for criminal circles that see an opportunity to increase quick and high profits, transporting migrants for a fee. However, this activity hides many risks – from putting the lives and health of migrants at risk, by benefiting organized criminal groups, which can subsequently invest the accumulated capital in other illegal activities, to complete instability in the state and a low level of trust among partners. The aim of this material is to clarify the trends and challenges that the Republic of Bulgaria is facing in relation to irregular migration taking place through the country.

- Summary/Abstract:The report examines the situation of unaccompanied refugee children in Bulgaria over the last 6 years (2019 to 2024), covering the latest refugee wave to Europe. As children with multiple vulnerabilities, unaccompanied children seeking international protection need comprehensive support, including first and foremost a family environment and inclusion in the education system. Data show that in Bulgaria unaccompanied refugee children remain not only outside the education system, but also outside the protection system, whose role is to guarantee the fundamental rights of the child. Unaccompanied children are hardly recognizable as children from institutions, and the parallel system in place to guarantee their lives and well-being faces serious challenges to cope.

The problems are reflected in low wages for healthcare workers, lack of modern technologies, and uneven distribution of medical facilities, particularly in rural areas. Proposed reforms include increasing funding, improving conditions for healthcare professionals, encouraging innovation, and strengthening prevention and health literacy among the population. These measures could improve the quality and access to healthcare services in Bulgaria.

The findings indicate that life satisfaction has a stronger impact on quality of life than the reverse, yet the two remain interconnected. Financial status, education level, and self-rated health have a greater influence on quality of life, whereas psychological factors – such as depression, guilt, and social isolation—play a more significant role in shaping life satisfaction. These distinctions emphasize the need for targeted policy strategies aimed at improving the well-being of the older population

- Summary/Abstract:Measurement tools are often used to evaluate social aspects connected to society. Such tools are used to create and implement different development policies. The measurement tools are used to estimate social indicators, such as the standard of living. However, it is also important to consider to what extent these tools can create an illusion of progress and stability. The different approaches and theories show that the social reality is multilayered and requires a deeper understanding to accurately reflect the social processes and social relations. The paper analyses a study related to the regional priorities of the districts in Bulgaria conducted by the Institute for Market Economics (IME) to check whether there is an inconsistency between the general and detailed results and the methodology used to analyse the data.

The analysis concludes that modernization deficits in Bulgarian society hinder the establishment of public attitudes that would favor the full social integration of people with disabilities and do not allow the topic of the sexuality of women with disabilities to emerge from the zone of taboos.

- Summary/Abstract:This report analyzes models for measuring cultural differences by comparing Hofstede’s approach with the Global Collectivism Index (GCI). Although Hofstede’s model has made a significant contribution to the study of cultures, its nature fails to capture the contemporary dynamics of cultural change. Developed to eliminate Western biases, the GCI offers a more comprehensive analysis of collectivism across different countries. The report highlights Bulgaria’s complex cultural identity and concludes that the GCI is a more suitable tool for macro-level analysis of cultural trends in the context of globalization.

- Keywords:psychographic profiles; gender; risk; communication; information society
- Summary/Abstract:The central problem of the modern information society has become the question of how an individual can cope with the information avalanche in order to function successfully. The methodology for defining psychographic profiles has shown that a person starts an automated mechanism, with the valves of his communication channels letting through the information that is closest to his essence. The population is segmented into 4 groups that are clearly distinguished from each other, and include people with similar psychographic characteristics. These groups are constant as a species, but long-term consecutive studies have demonstrated that the volume of these groups varies. Gender differences in the dynamics of attitudes towards risk under the pressure of strongly negative processes and phenomena in certain periods turned out to be particularly significant. Knowledge of the principles of such transformations facilitates both economic entities and other social structures in building more successful communication to the desired recipients.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper focuses on the topic of misinterpreted feminism, which has a significant impact in the country. It is divided into two sections – theoretical part and empirical research. In the theoretical part, we examine the origin, causes, and public opinion in Bulgaria regarding the movement. With the theoretical part of the report, we aim to clarify the exact definition of feminism on a deeper level. In the empirical part, we focus on public views regarding the ideology, by creating a questionnaire with 13 questions. In this section, we summarize and analyze the responses of the respondents who participated in the survey. Based on their responses, we not only present their perspectives, but also demonstrate how a lack of education on the topic and its misrepresentation in the media leads to a misperception of the importance of feminism and women‘s emancipation.

- Summary/Abstract:The report examines the societal boundaries of acceptability regarding erotica in the advertising industry in Bulgaria. It is assumed that the perception of erotic elements in advertising depends not only on companies‘ marketing strategies but also on the social and cultural norms that shape public reactions. Cultural values, religious beliefs, and legal regulations can either restrict or facilitate the use of erotica in advertising. The study focuses on Bulgarian advertising campaigns that incorporate erotic elements. The subject of analysis is the interaction between erotica in the advertising industry and societal boundaries. Examples from real advertising campaigns, media reactions, and ethical regulations, as well as an analysis of academic research, are used to assess the balance between marketing objectives and public opinion.
