Summary/Abstract: The recognition of European citizenship by the Treaty on the European Union (TEU) introduced a novel legal institution into the European legal and political order. The concept of European citizenship was unknown in international law until recently. However, in its current form, it is very limited in its scope and offers a very limited list of rights.
