Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the problem of musical competence which, together with the listener’s knowledge of music, fulfills a very important role in the process of musical perception and, at the same time, in the process of its valuation. The author starts from the general cultural competence and going through language and artistic competences comes precisely to the musical competence. She presents the world famous model of musical competence by Gino Stefani in which there are five levels of competence: General Codes (GC), Social Practices (SP), Musical Techniques (MT), Style (ST) and Opus (OP). She applies the Stefani’s theory to the perception of the outstanding example of Polish art music: "Sinfonia sacra" by Andrzej Panufnik. The aim of this article was to indicate the relationship between the listener’s musical competence and the possibility of apprehension of a musical work’s values.
