Summary/Abstract: The article examines the “world-word” pair in the times of Goethe, when the concept of “world literature” originated, and in the present day. It discusses the changes introduced to the pair’s components, the problematisation of the world’s Eurocentrism, and the transformation of English into a common language (lingua franca), as well as the significance of translation in earning a writer’s ‘world’ status.
