Summary/Abstract: In 2016 we have celebrated two significant events: a Silver jubilee to mark the 25th year of the establishment of the Faculty of Philological Studies and the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the South West University in Blagoevgrad. Both events are loaded not only with the symbols of the anniversaries but also with the hard work, perseverance, commitment and emotions of a few generations of scholars and researchers, who devoted their time and work to the elevation of the philological and university knowledge in South-west Bulgaria to the highest ranks in the country. The Collection of articles, offered to the readers’ attention, has been named after the National conference with international participation: “The World is the Word and the Word is the World” since our admiration for the words is in the base of our love to philological knowledge. It comprises most of the conference papers, presented in the event, organised as part of the celebrations of the two anniversaries – of the Faculty of Philological Studies and of the South-West University in Blagoevgrad. The event evoked significant interest, which is a clear sign for the fact that philology and our faculty have a great number of loyal friends not only in our country but also abroad. Our conference attracted more than a hundred philologists from over ten countries – Norway, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Poland, Serbia, Greece, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and, certainly, Bulgaria. Articles by prominent scholars from the major Bulgarian universities – SU ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’, St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, PU ‘ Paisii Hilendarski’, BU ‘ Prof. Dr Asen Zlanatarov’ as well as a number of research institutions such as the Bulgarian Language Institute ‘Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin’, the Literature Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies and the Ethnography Museum of BAS, the Institute of Solid-state Physics ‘ Acad. Georgi Nadvakov’ of BAS, the Cyril-Methodius Research Centre of BAS, etc – stand out among the contributions to the Collection. Research papers were presented by scholars from a number of European centres of learning: the University of Oslo, Norway; the University of Eastern Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Macedonia University in Thessaloniki, Greece; Trnava University in Bratislava, Slovakia; Charles University in Prague, the Czech Republic, etc. The multiple contributions present a large diversity of research topics coming from nearly all spheres of philological knowledge – from linguistics and the social nature of language, through philosophy, semiotics and the pragmatics of language to the problems of Bulgarian and European literature and literary theory, of folklore, ethnology, ethnography and the preserving of cultural heritage. The order of the papers, published in the proceedings, follows the conference programme so the reader will be able to choose from the following seven topical areas: 1. Linguistics: synchronic and diachronic research; 2. Language and culture. Language and subculture; 3. Sociolinguistics, folkloristics and ethnology; 4. Modern Bulgarian and world literature; 5. Media, communications and manipulation; 6. Translation and interpretation: theory and practice; 7. Methodology and didactics. One of the main purposes of such publications is the “meeting” and exchange of a multitude of scholarly ideas, as well as ideas of how we as philologists and humanity scholars can continue our work in a world set on the fast track and full of challenges, where the pragmatism of thought would often put established models on trial. The proceedings are printed on 537 pages and each text is accompanied by an annotation in English with keywords, for easier orientation in the topic area, and author’s E-mail contacts. Foreign language texts are printed in the original so that their meaning and ideas would not be lost in translation. The editors and authors of the conference proceedings, entitled “The World is the Word and the Word is the World”, hope that the present publication is compatible with modern philological research, matches the pragmatic ideas for the development of philology as a science, as well as satisfies the insatiable thirst for knowledge and explanation of philological issues, phenomena and facts from the world around us.

Medical terminology is a layer of lexical fund with its specific features. In the modern stage development medical terms are widely colloquially used in the literary language, in healthcare, in medical practice. New technologies and dynamic economic processes are a prerequisite for the development of linguistic processes and events. Lexical innovation is a constant process, which evolve and enriches the language. Modern medical terminology over the past two decades is constantly filled with many new lexical resources as a result of the development of medical science. These are words and complex terms or phrases which are approved in a specific professional field. At the beginning of the XXI century English managed to become the dominant means of communication between people worldwide. This fact contributes to the entry of words with English origin in medical discourse. At this stage the medical neologiya is an open system of lexical-semantic relationships. Based on the structure of terms, the following basic terminology types are: single words-terms (ednoleksemes) and terms - phrases (polileksemes). In recent years as a result of which the speech is enriched with synonymous funds for communication purposes, there has been active using of new medical neologisms in modern medical discourse.

- Page Range:95-101
- No. of Pages:7
- Keywords:phonology; binary oppositions; structural relations; neutralization; correlation; three-element structural model
- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents a three-element (three-dimensional) structural model which advances a new theoretical approach in phonology and offers a different perspective to the elements and structural relations constituting the micro-systems of binary oppositions. The hidden third element has been presented through its spatial synchronic projection realized as a functional equivalent to a phoneme. Its manifestation in standart Bulgarian style is to be identified in the position of neutralization between the vowels in the correlation open – closed (tense - lax) and between the consonants in the correlation voiced – voiceless and clear – dark. Unlike the binary opposition model, the three-element structural model is one that reflects in a more realistic manner the natural state of both the phonetic and the phonological systems in accord with three-dimensional space as well as with the natural laws of physics and natural systems (constructions).

Languages which are rich in diminutive forms, such as Russian and Bulgarian, have also augmentative forms expressed predominantly by augmentative suffixes, i.e. synthetically. Analytical augmentative formation is also possible, but these forms lack the expressive-emotional connotation. Languages (like English), which have few diminutive but no augmentative suffixes, form augmentation analytically, i.e. by means of adjectival modifiers.

- Summary/Abstract:One of the specific characteristics concerning the modern development of Bulgarian language is a linguistic cliche - a phenomenon which is unique in its versatility and multi-functionality. This paper comprises selected, analyzed and summarized indicative viewpoints from various forums about cliche, and in particular linguistic cliche. Although a lot of the interpretations are contradictory, they all emphasize certain, often different, parameters and characteristics with regard to the way a cliche functions. Perceived as a multi-meaning and multi-function linguistic phenomenon with a wide range of social and psychological parameters and used in different speech situations and socio-cultural spheres a cliche due to its universality is being universalized. This research is an attempt to explain a linguistic cliche with the help of the specific sociopsychological characteristics of modern communication. The observations on Bulgarian language regarding its place, function, role and the dynamics of its current state give every reason to define a cliche as a linguistic phenomenon.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the paper is to present some not popular or unknown attempts to systemize and interpret part of the vocabulary of the Banat Bulgarian literary language. This archaic Bulgarian dialect was codified as literary microlanguage because of historical circumstances. In 1896 the first and the only Bulgarian-Hungarian thematic dictionary was published - Kis magyar-bolgar szotar bolgar nepiskolai tanulok szamara"– Manen madžarsći-balgarsći rečnić zarad balgarsći narudniškulsći škulare. It was designed for the Bulgarian pupils in the primary classes of the Hungarian schools; today this dictionary is a precious source about the condition and the vocabulary of the dialect. The emphasis in the paper is placed on the attempts after 1990 in the vocabulary sections of the newspaper „Naša glas“, in the prefaces of the issues of Banat popular fairy tales (Banatsći balgarsći prikazći) in the addendum to the book Banatsćija balgarsći dialekt i pismenus, part of the vocabulary of the present and archaic strata of the dialect to be collected and presented.

To study the historical roots of the Bulgarian-Hungarian relations, we have to look to the distant past – to the ages before the foundation of the Bulgarian and Hungarian states when the two nations lived side by side and in good neighbourly relations for a very long time. This is reflected in the two nations’ legends and folk art, and also in certain linguistic facts. Important milestones in the history of the Bulgarian- Hungarian relations are John Hunyadi’s military campaigns and the Battle of Varna, the cultural activity of the Kossuth Emigration, as well as the migration of Bulgarian gardeners to Hungary.

- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:cultural heritage; Kalinitsa; urban festival; St. Mary; Midsummer
- Summary/Abstract:The "Kalinitsa" festival is an example of the revival of a local tradition, which acquires new life by interpreting it as part of the cultural heritage of Assenovgrad. The "little Jerusalem" is the popular nickname of the town, reflecting a shared idea of centuries-old Orthodox culture, many churches, monasteries and chapels in the town and its surroundings. The project “Assenovgrad – the sacred gate of the Rhodopes” and the routes of pilgrimage tourism in “The Rhodope Holy Mountain” highlight these characteristics of the region. Integrated in the cultural calendar of the town, "Kalinitsa" is now a representative festival, utilized to become one of the tourist attractions. Except in print media, this event is promoted through the Facebook profile of the Tourist Information Centre at the Municipality. In the context of these policies of constructing cultural heritage and turning it into an attractive tourist product, the author presents a cultural practice and a revived tradition, surpassing the original legend. The aim of the study is to determine how "Kalinitsa" is reconstructed nowadays, what are the main functions and the importance that the local community attributes to it. The analysis identifies the main discourses associated with this holiday, paying attention to the role of collective and individual memory in shaping modern practices and models of celebration in the community. In the disclosure of all aspects of this tradition the author leans upon personal observations, stories of participants and earlier ethnographic studies.

- Keywords:cultural heritage; economy; cultural approaches; small bread-makers; construction of heritage
- Summary/Abstract:The trends of healthy nutrition spreading worldwide can be observed by the example of the extending consumer niche, oriented to the demand for bread, made by hand and baked in small bakeries. The entrepreneurs, owners of such bakeries I investigated in 2015, claim that in the process of their professional work and by its results they have been endeavoring to fit in that niche oriented to healthy and nature-conforming nutrition. Apart from laying emphasis on the use of maximum high quality products in bread-making, they also apply cultural approaches in order to construct the image of bread as a cultural value, inherited from the past, and to conceptualize the ways and technologies of its production as social actions marking “a return to traditions”. The entrepreneurs display the production and marketing of a product of a very high symbolic value, exceeding and even incomparable with its market value. In this way small bread-makers practically become part in the generation of cultural heritage. The article presents some cultural approaches of small bread-makers in Bulgaria, whereby bread-making has been constructed as cultural heritage. I identified these approaches in the self-presentation of the members of the branch organization “Bulgarian Guild of Bakers” (constituted in 2014) during their participation in the Crafts Fair in Plovdiv in April 2015. For the theoretical framework of my research I rely on the concepts of cultural heritage and its construction and instrumentalization, developed by Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, David Lowenthal, Herman Bausinger, Ingo Schneider and Robert Pekham.

Kataev’s “A White Sail Gleams” to the famous “Brigantine”, written by Pavel Kogan. Connected to the water and the air, the sail absorbs the essence of the elements. Another, more mental rather than physical change is the happening of an important event. The last one is responsible for the existence of history, although it actually lacks a solid substance to be measured in detail.

- Language:English

- Page Range:465-471
- No. of Pages:7
- Keywords:implicit/explicit knowledge; implicit/explicit learning; SLA; factors affecting SLA
- Summary/Abstract:Learners of L2 in foreign learning settings receive a different type of input, in terms of quantity and quality, and have a much more limited exposure to the target language. Having taken this into consideration, the research presented in this article attempted to analyse the outcomes of the L2 learning process which takes place in such conditions through the perspective of implicit /explicit learning and implicit / explicit knowledge dichotomy. It seems justified by the fact that the conditions in which L2 learning happens in a foreign language classroom do not resemble, even remotely, the naturalistic learning in immersion environment. The former presupposes mostly explicit learning and acquisition of explicit knowledge, which might or might not turn into implicit knowledge, depending on the length of learning and exposure to L2, whereas the latter presupposes implicit (L1 children-like) learning and acquisition of implicit knowledge, although it might be supplemented by explicit knowledge as a result of education in formal environment. The findings showed that the most significant factors which have an impact on learners’ performance on tests measuring implicit knowledge (TGJT and OIT) tend to be the length of exposure to L2 in environment where it is used as native and the starting age of learning, followed by length of learning and type of input, which were also found statistically significant. Learners who perform better on tests measuring implicit knowledge also demonstrate higher levels of proficiency, which points to the fact that an L2 is best learned through acquiring implicit knowledge.
