Summary/Abstract: Seeing the differences between the stories told by a man from Sáromberke, András Vajda, and those circulating within the community, one might ask the question: why do people lie? This question points our attention to the differences between one’s life and the instant reflections on a life cycle, on the constitutive, intentional and context-dependent nature of these reflections. In the case of András Vajda: 1) the stories change with the disavowal of their primary contexts (these stories shift in the direction of jokes or lying tales: tales equal lies), or they die away, 2) the stories woven into the life-story, and laden with new meanings live only in contexts provoked by the researcher, and the local community ignores them.
