- Summary/Abstract:Texts stored and applied by the community fill the life space with information. The knowledge of the place, of the past, of inhabitants and buildings, and the moral norms it implies, create the horizon of belonging together, the unity of place. The communication processes mediate information, create relations of solidarity or asymmetry between generations and individuals, between people and their environment. The local ballad has been noted and researched since the beginnings of ballad ethnography. It is a discursive form using lyrics and melody. It is a form of objectified memory that creates a sense for history, a consciousness of the past. Apart from these, the ballad solidifies a moral system of norms, a sense for different situations, dangers and risks. The local ballad is important also because it regulates social relationships and sustains certain attitudes for longer periods of time.

- Summary/Abstract:„Places” and „memory” denominate in fact two big categories of human perception: place and time. Narratives have always played an essential role in its formation. During the university research project introduced here the geographical place did not only constitute the object of our research, but it became also the site for the presentation of the research’s outputs. In this case, I speak about an artistic installation. Alternative approaches, like this installation, emphasize that history (and historiography) are not the only agents that take part in these processes of transformation. Art and other different imaginative industries, the narratives used in everyday life have an equally important role in the cultural sacralization of place. On the other hand, while Pierre Nora and the cultural studies researches that link to his views treat the relationship between historical time and places of memory, this installation brings our attention to “another history” that dwells in objects and parts of nature, and constitutes a frame for places of memory.

- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Anthropology, Social Sciences
- Page Range:57-66
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:topics;narrativist theories of history;thopos;historiography
- Summary/Abstract:I will speak about how objectivity and the concept of narrative become important in reflexions of the problem of reality vs. fiction. How the opposition of real vs. factual is reframed with the attention redirected to the nature of narrative? And how does the value of historical knowledge change? The narrative as a forming power of the text is an important part of historiography from the beginnings. But in the last few years’ reflexions on the nature of narrative do not only treat narrative as a rhetorical, but also as a cognitive tool, and this is the point that could be of interest not only for historians, but also for other human and social scientists.Hayden White speaks about four dominant traits of Western reflections upon the role of narratives in historiography. I try to introduce these drawing on White’s „The Question of Narrative in Contemporary Historical Theory“. My conclusion is, that if the identity and actions of individuals and communities are formed by narratives organized around certain thoposes, than the understanding of these topics might help us to understand other types of social phenomena as well.

- Author(s):Imre Ungvári Zrínyi

- Subject(s):Anthropology, Philosophy, Social Sciences, Social Philosophy
- Page Range:67-85
- No. of Pages:19
- Keywords:sameness;otherness;identity buliding
- Summary/Abstract:The analysis of social and individual representations of sameness and otherness involves all major aspects of anthropological and cultural studies. The elements of identity revealed in people’s narrative structures bind together and mediate the actual states of the self with personal history and the community relations of the life-world. The canonic interpretations of sameness and otherness in a community are not just elements of imagination, but as stereotypic expressions influence the people’s conception about themselves, their community and their fellows. To avoid the threat of prejudicious thinking behind the Hungarian–Romanian, Hungarian–Jewish and Hungarian–Rom narratives of identity is of utmost importance to not accept uncritically the representations of social categorization.

- Author(s):Dávid Kaposi
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Anthropology, Social Sciences, Communication studies
- Page Range:87-99
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:Adolf Eichmann;objectivity;memory
- Summary/Abstract:This paper treats the trial of Adolf Eichmann as a discursive product. Instead of examining it along traditional psychological concerns (what does he remember?, how proper his memory is? etc.) the traditional concept of memory gains a discursive emphasis in this study. I turn to questions like „how Eichmann’s ’memory’ is constructed throughout the trial?”, „what sort of versions and counter-versions do exist in the discursive field?”, „what kind of consequences do they entail?” and so on. To sum up, the discursive approach treats remembering, and memory-talk (that is, talking about remembering and memory) as a vital means of the constructions of identities. Thus, its emphasis is on meaning, discursive practices, rather than purely mental procedures and stable context.

- Summary/Abstract:Analyzing the journal of the writer Antal Szerb, I concentrate upon the premises of literary history and literary criticism behind the editor’s gesture. I investigate some questions and problems of literary life that are linked to the publishing of this journal. Publishing a text documenting the writer’s personal life presupposes that this is of public interest. This gesture is an unequivocal sign of canonization and classicization. In the case of Antal Szerb, the journal also documents the reality-forming power of discrimination/exclusion and double identity.

- Author(s):Ildikó Ungvári Zrínyi
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Anthropology, Social Sciences, Communication studies
- Page Range:123-137
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:memory; narratives of gestures;cultural memory;self
- Summary/Abstract:Our world of gestures is also an involuntary institution of memory, which has an important role in maintaining the cultural memory. Questioning its meaning and laws or even wondering at it leads directly to the question how can a gesture become part of a narrative and in which way can it obtain a narrative function. Gestures are built in our everyday communication processes in alternation with the verbal language or illustrating it in a more or less parallel way. In the technical era, the proportion of certain gesture manifestations is growing, while the fragmented public sphere allows more and more the changes of points of views, which results a larger sphere of interpretation. Although cultural memory tends to express itself in the forms of written culture, it can be expressed with some types of gestures that are used even in today’s organized memory. Even the narrated identity of the Self can be expressed by a gesture that fits into his/her dense narrative expressed by gestures and/or by various other (verbal, objectual, spatial) components. This is a narrative or set of narratives that is allowed by the Self to be used in the public sphere.

- Keywords:storyteller;life-story;Sáromberke
- Summary/Abstract:Seeing the differences between the stories told by a man from Sáromberke, András Vajda, and those circulating within the community, one might ask the question: why do people lie? This question points our attention to the differences between one’s life and the instant reflections on a life cycle, on the constitutive, intentional and context-dependent nature of these reflections. In the case of András Vajda: 1) the stories change with the disavowal of their primary contexts (these stories shift in the direction of jokes or lying tales: tales equal lies), or they die away, 2) the stories woven into the life-story, and laden with new meanings live only in contexts provoked by the researcher, and the local community ignores them.

- Keywords:diaspora;life-story;community
- Summary/Abstract:In this paper I treat possible discourses in a diaspora situation, focusing on the life story of an artist living in a South-Transylvanian diasporic locality. My interest is how a naive artist living in a diaspora speaks about herself, how she constructs textually herself. What kind of stories will form her life story, what are the moments of her life that she considers worth telling and that organize her identity. Do the motives of diasporization emerge spontaneously in her storytelling, and if they do, how? Does it mean a problem, a scarcity for her, to live in a diaspora? The story of A.E. is part of the story of the community, the motives of her story are the motives that guide the memory of the community.

- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:communicative memory;saeculum;cultural memory
- Summary/Abstract:This presentation makes use of the results of an interview research among former party activists and state functionaries. The fact that the communicative memory today focuses upon the researched era, and raises the issue of responsibility, forces the rememberer to rework the past. One can talk with former party functionaries for long hours about how they think about the former party organization, about people taking part in it, maybe their former self, but not about events and concrete situations. The hardest is to find out about past daily duties. The rememberers include themselves into the discourses of communicative memory. We have to wait for the saeculum (Assmann) to pass, in order that the communicative memory should be freed of these dynamics, and transform into cultural memory.

- Page Range:179-189
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:memory;photos;movie;self-identity
- Summary/Abstract:I will speak about movie protagonists who, in the strictest sense, store their memories in photos. Their memory functions only by this technology – ant thus, the agents of this access will be not only the protagonists, but also us, viewers, who will construct a more or less coherent identity for the protagonists on the base of these pictures. My protagonists do not only use photos to remember by: they also have notes, drawings and novels to dispose of. What is common in all these forms, is the externalization of memory. The photos constitute a core of self-identity that can be accessed in need, and identified with, over and over. What I investigate is the implications of using photography in such techniques, and the roles of mediatized pictures in these fictional worlds.

- Summary/Abstract:In Széchenyi’s definition, self-reflection is the intellectual effort by which the self, in a process of self-interpretation and self-correction, creates its particular identity. The practice of self-interpretation, thus, is the base of the interpretation of being, because this is how one can form a picture about himself and the world. This way, he recreates himself and the world, narratively. The series of symbols that follow through his walk of life, present us the formation of Széchenyi’s ideas. The differences in their meanings show the differences in the formation of his worldview. In my paper I follow the formation of a motive of a story of remorse, on the base of the journals and their sequence, the confessions from Döbling.

- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:psychodrama;narratives; play
- Summary/Abstract:In this paper I introduce a play, which proves that the technique of psychodrama is capable to create self-healing narratives. Its protagonist creates a family narrative by which he can recall self-empowering memories. He has to go back to his dead ancestors, in order to find out what he can learn from which family member, how one should reestablish outside and inner control, how he can find spiritual consistency, and how life becomes dynamic again. He hopes that through remembering his childhood friend and his childhood self, he will regain his self-confidence. The solution seems attainable through the imagination of a narrative of recalled memories. This is where he can gain power from and meet positive family messages, and then resist negative social heritage. For a change, the old identity has to come to pieces it he collective unconscious and be reborn as a new structure. This is where the narratives speaking it he language of symbols can be of help.

- Summary/Abstract:The formation of the narrative ability, and the narrative ability of ourselves, has a long way to go. What I investigate is the position of 10-12 year olds in this process. I also ask, how analyses of autobiographies and the structure of narratives can be applied to self-narratives by elementary pupils. The material of my research is data gathered by a study financed by the Ministry of Education, and led by Rita Pletl, that referred to the whole Hungarian school system in Romania. The study meant to measure the knowledge of mother tongue, and has controls in Hungary. Within it, the composing capacities in the he fourth grade of elementary school was measured by „write a tale” free compositions. In my degree paper I analyzed the whole material, 1236 tales with content analysis. My conclusion is, that telling stories about ourselves helps the formation of self-consciousness, of an autobiographical past. Understanding the world, the reality means understanding myself.

Ádám Bodor’s novel describes a world which might be easy to be recognized by us, who live in post-dictatorial countries. What is the element that makes a difference between this novel and others that concern the same theme? In this paper I ask what conception of a community is formed in those living in the environment described in the he novel, and how it can be compared to primitive cultures. How is the identity of these people built up, how is it connected to their names, or nicknames, how does, if it does, a change of identity occur, and how does the protagonist speak about all these.
