Summary/Abstract: Max Weber’s thesis was an inspiration for reflections presented in the following paper. German scholar suggested that there was a “spirit of capitalism”, deeply-rooted in the Protestant ethics, which promoted development of modern capitalism. However, we believe that the “spirit of capitalism” bases on more universal rules. We described the set of these rules as a normative capital. We decided to present in the paper a theoretical conception that expresses our point of view on the matter. These theoretical reflections were placed in a specific empirical context. What is the subject of our interest is the processes of the accumulation and use of normative capital in Poland and Ukraine. Both countries began to transform their economies at the same time, but the results of these economic changes are completely different at present. Since we agree with Weber that there is a relationship between attitudes and economic development, we decided to analyze the former one. We use the data from both European Value Study (2008) as well as International Social Survey Programme (2009). We focused our reflections especially on young people, because we assumed that their attitudes could be used as predictors of changes in the field of work.
