Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the expansion of organized football in the period of the 1st Czechoslovak Republic. Author focuses on changes in the structure of its competitions. Till the end of the first republic in 1938 football clubs in Slovakia remained divided between Czechoslovak and Hungarian football union which were both part of the Prague’s statewide Czechoslovak football association. But there was a positive side of this division, too. It had a significant impact on building of the Slovak national identity. The author outlines the increase of football’s popularity among the inhabitants of Slovakia and the enlarging place of this sport on the pages of Slovak newspapers. He tries to describe new phenomenon related to the growing number of football fans in Slovakia, too.
