Summary/Abstract: This collective monograph consists from 15 chapters written by Slovak historians and other social scientists who tried to sketch the life in inter-war Slovakia. The chapters are focusing on politics and economy but mostly on social and cultural aspects of the life of society. The authors tried to answer the basic question: how was the period of 20 years, from the emergence of Czechoslovakia in 1918 till the introduction of the Slovak autonomy in 1938, with its democratic, national, cultural, institutional, technical and economical changes reflected in everyday life of common people. From this prospective, the authors came with lot of new, interesting and challenging outcomes of their research. As a result of that, this book creates an original and colorful image of the history of Slovakia in Czechoslovakia. One of its goals was to turn over the attention of experts and broader audience to the topics from the Slovak history that have not been favored by the Slovak historiography before. Although the book is limited to the period of inter-war years, lot of phenomenon sparked by the events of 1918 exceeded the year 1938. For some of them there is continuity in the next decades or are relevant even today. The publication enables the reader to follow and evaluate different present-day social phenomenon from the perspective of their historical evolution. Those facts demonstrate that the methodology and the approach of the book are very important for the research of Slovak history today. If experts and broader audience find in it interesting information and challenging observation about the changes of Slovakia during the period of inter-war Czechoslovakia, the goal of the authors was fulfilled.

- Summary/Abstract:Pri sledovaní krátkych a relatívne pokojných dejinných úsekov môžu pokusy o uchopenie záchytných bodov v ich historickom vývoji spôsobovať ťažkosti. Vo vnútornej politike bolo nevyhnutné zabezpečiť podmienky na tieto ciele v ná- rodnostnej, administratívnej, legislatívnej oblasti a v mnohých iných sférach. V záujme naplnenia týchto zámerov sa podniklo mnoho krokov, ktoré si vyžadovali kompromisy i taktizovanie, pričom aj tu platí, že efekt a kontinuitu niektorých z nich preveria až desaťročia.

- Summary/Abstract:The Czechoslovak Republic was, besides Switzerland, until the Munich Agreement in September 1938, the only parliamentary democracy of the Central-Eastern Europe in the period between the two world wars. However, it does not mean that the Czechoslovak democracy did not show any democratic practices shortfalls which were not usual in the traditional Western democracies. These shortcomings of democratic politics weakened the trust of the Czechoslovak citizens into the democratic regime at that time. The paper studies symptoms of that deficit in the three areas of the political life at the time: 1) insufficient respect to valid laws and democratic rules of the Czechoslovak political life, 2) the unfair ways of the political struggle among political parties and, 3) personal scandals of prominent and influent politicians and, often, their obscure solutions, which also spread in the public doubts about the correctness and purity of the Czechoslovak politics at that time. Anyway, the Czechoslovak political elite were able to preserve the parliamentary democracy in Czechoslovakia. The factors of its decline, after Munich, were primarily external.

- Summary/Abstract:After the establishment of interwar Czechoslovakia in 1918 it was evident that the political culture of population and the support of state by its citizens in Slovakia represented a serious problem. The role of the emerging political elites was to build a positive attitude of population to the new regime. In this context, the most important population group represented the Slovak population. It shared, in its majority, indifferent attitude to the creation of the Czechoslovak State. State elites, on the contrary, shared idea of “political immaturity” of the so-called Slovak people. The paper focuses on the political socialization of the Slovak population, its agenda and agents in the early years of the Republic, and marginally on impact of emerging politicization of life on individuals, families and community.

- Summary/Abstract:After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic aristocracy became one of the social classes that lost their political and economic influence. Behaviour of its members in the Slovak circumstances can be described by six model cases: escape and taking part in irredentism, fall between poor, social withdrawal, social openness and adaptation to the new regime, identification and service for the new regime and, finally, return after the initial escape. However, the idea of monarchism had a longer life then aristocracy itself. It was a alternative to the development of state for another 20 years.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper focuses the inter-war period from the perspective of longue durée processes study. For the analysis, the author uses ethnographic data concerning architecture and housing in three Slovak rural settlements. The paper aims to discuss the periodicity of the 20th century history, based on the important political events. Ethnographic data from the inter-war Slovak countryside emphasizes ambiguity of this period. The key argument is the statement, that dynamism of the processes in the microsocial structures, concerning everyday culture of the ordinary people, has different character and different impact than the processes on the macrosocial level.

- Summary/Abstract:During the inter-war period, the common denominator of the technical progress in the Slovak households and the material aspect of the life of the whole society were the acceleration and completion of the electrification process, which started in the end of the 19th century. The level of electrification is one of the main criteria used for evaluation of the technical development in the Slovak households. Regarding the broader aspects, the achieved stage of progress in energetic is also one of the key criteria of modernisation and higher life and cultural standard both in the cities and the country. At the same time the peasantry had to solve the problem of the poor technical equipment of their farms. With considerable mistrust, farmers started to use the first electric devices. In the Slovak households the process of technical modernisation was rather slow during the inter-war period and the falling behind the Western Europe was substantial.

The number of Slovak tavern businesses increased, new types of businesses emerged, for example in tourism and sport. The level of hotel services also improved. However, some legislative measures and political interventions aimed to restrict production, distribution and sale of alcohol brought significant problems to the tavern trade. There were certain changes in the culture of alcohol consumption, too. One of the factors was the spread of beer consumption influenced by its popularity in the Czech lands. The other significant change was a partial decrease of high-percentage alcohol consumption. Its consumption had negative consequences mostly for social development of Slovak countryside.

Small number of high school teachers who were initially members of the Central Union of Czechoslovak Professors abandoned it and in 1921 created its own organization called Slovak Professors Club (SPC). There were professional, social and nationalist reasons of their act. The club criticised several activities of the Ministry of Education and its department in Bratislava in 1921 – 1939. SPC came to an end in the school year 1942/1943.

- Keywords:Standard Slovak Language; Inter-war Period;
- Summary/Abstract:The inter-war period is a distinctive chapter in the history of standard Slovak language. The author deals with two sharply divergent tendencies in the development of standard Slovak language: The first one followed the footsteps of the so called Martin custom and Czambel’s codifying work Rukoväť spisovnej reči slovenskej [The Handgrip of Standard Slovak Language] (1902, 1915, 1919). The second tendency was connected with the official state policy of one common Czechoslovak nation which used one Czechoslovak language. This language had two variants: Czech, used on the territory with the Czech speaking population and Slovak, used on the territory with the Slovak speaking population. According to this second tendency, the first rules of the Slovak orthography were published in 1931. They were rejected by the Slovak cultural society for their Bohemian tendencies. H. Bartek came with a new proposal of the rules for Slovak orthography in 1939, but it was rejected by a Comenius University commission (J. Stanislav, A. Mráz, Ľ. Novák and D. Rapant). The members of the commission authorized A. A. Banák to prepare new set of rules. Their publishing in 1940 proved to be disfunctional. The codification of orthography in 1953 proved functionality of Bartek’s proposal from 1939. The praxis showed his proposal was right and even today it is still the cornerstone of standard Slovak language.

- Summary/Abstract:Radio broadcasting in Slovakia was organized by the Prague-based, state-controlled radio corporation Radiojournal. Its Bratislava branch commenced activities on August 3rd, 1926, and the Košice branch on April 17th, 1926. The Slovak and the Czech branches (Brno, Ostrava) transmitted a common programme, dominated by the productions of the Prague headquarters of Radiojournal, as well as their own programmes. The latter were created in makeshift premises at first, but by 1930 the Bratislava and Košice branches resided in buildings built according to the specifications of radio broadcasting. The Košice branch and, later, the Bratislava branch, then moved on from broadcasting news and art productions to specific radio genres – reportage, feature, radio drama. Educational broadcasts also played an important part. News programmes and political commentaries were the preserve of the Prague headquarters, and this was also to a large extent true of the symphonic music programmes. In the second half of the 1930‘s, the Bratislava staff tried to shift the focus of their music programming from light genres to a higher proportion of symphonic music. To this end, a proposal was tabled to expand the Bratislava radio orchestra, founded in 1929. This was turned down, as well as the proposal to broadcast world drama from Bratislava. Starting in 1936, when, thanks to the newly-installed transmitter in Banská Bystrica, a substantial part of Slovakia was covered by the radio signal, the radio has become a widely-used information source. The number of licensees reached 100 thousand. Both branches provided educational programmes, non-music and music programmes. They provided outlets for the work of writers, performance artists and journalists. They supported the Czechoslovak state and its leadership, and countered the irredentist propaganda of the Hungarian radio. The branches contributed to the rise of the national spirit and helped overcome the regional fragmentation of the country.

- Summary/Abstract:The author describes the origin of the Slovak National Theatre (Slovenské národné divadlo) in Bratislava (1920), the grounds of which were composed of the theatre ensemble from Pardubice led by director Bedřich Jeřábek. The author writes about the quest for the identity of the Slovak professional theatre on the crossroad of different cultures – German, Hungarian, Czech and Slovak. The beginnings of the Slovak National Theatre were marked by the collisions between artistic ambitions (dramaturgy, dramatic art, direction, scenography, the creation of separate Slovak Drama Company of the Slovak National Theatre, 1932) and economic conditions / indicators (private or co-operative capital). Financial problems were seen in the taste and background of theatre-goers. During the first years of its existence, the activity of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava was strongly influenced by political and social circumstances which also continued later. Among those was a low interest of the theatre-goers for Slovak theatre performances which started to increase only after some time, especially after Slovak actors joined the ensemble (e.g. Hana Meličková, Ján Borodáč and Oľga Országhová-Borodáčová, Andrej Bagar), and repertoire of higher quality was seen. The last turning point of this era was the forced liquidation of the Czech Drama Company of the Slovak National Theatre in November 1938 which was directly linked to the formation of the Slovak Republic.

- Summary/Abstract:Among other goals, the state authorities in the inter-war Czechoslovakia declared their determination to improve the care for children and youth. However, the dark side of life of this part of population was the problem of its increasing criminal activity. Its share on crimes increased sharply during the World War I and this trend did not change after the war, either. On the other hand, children and youth belonged to the most endangered social groups. Efforts of state authorities to change this path did not bring prospective effect. Criminal activities of youth were caused by several reasons. Among the most significant were the failure of parental care, unsatisfactory social-economic conditions or the unsufficient number of voluntary organizations that took care about children and youth.

- Summary/Abstract:Slovenskí historici a odborníci z iných spoločenských vied sa v pätnástich kapitolách tejto kolektívnej monografi e pokúsili priblížiť život medzivojnovej spoločnosti na Slovensku prostredníctvom sond do politiky, ekonomiky, ale predovšetkým do sociálnej a kultúrnej oblasti.

- Summary/Abstract:This collective monograph consists from 15 chapters written by Slovak historians and other social scientists who tried to sketch the life in inter-war Slovakia. The chapters are focusing on politics and economy but mostly on social and cultural aspects of the life of society. The authors tried to answer the basic question: how was the period of 20 years, from the emergence of Czechoslovakia in 1918 till the introduction of the Slovak autonomy in 1938, with its democratic, national, cultural, institutional, technical and economical changes refl ected in everyday life of common people. From this prospective, the authors came with lot of new, interesting and challenging outcomes of their research. As a result of that, this book creates an original and colorful image of the history of Slovakia in Czechoslovakia.
