Summary/Abstract: How could the 19th century be understood in historiographical terms? The Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm (1917–2012) called it the “long century”; according to him, the Age of Empire ended in 1914 with the beginning of WWI that proved to be the beginning of the end of four European Empires: the Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman and Russian Empires. The Age of Extremes, the short 20th century, followed; it ended with the collapse of Communism in Europe and the end of the Cold War. Hobsbawm’s historiographical paradigms of the 19th and 20th century explain European political history and also the political conditions that ruled in the Czech lands and Slovakia under Habsburg rule. Yet how did citizens conceive of politics, what political ideas did they adhere to and what did they do to realize these ideas? For the purpose of this study, I suggest an interdisciplinary approach, focussing on the political ideas that were emerging in the long 19th century in Upper Hungary and the Czech lands.
