Summary/Abstract: At a time when the voice of feminists is getting stronger and the number of women writers is increasing, Rachilde’s position seems ambiguous, if not paradoxical. A woman writer herself, an author of several novels appreciated by the public, a literary critic at the Mercure de France, she could become an important figure in the feminist movement. And yet she systematically flouts its claims; she also remains very critical of the women’s writing, of which she refuses to be a part. Hence, it seems interesting to look for the causes of such an attitude. The scope of the subject and, even more, the contradictory statements of Rachilde herself, will at most allow us to formulate some hypotheses. However, we shall examine more closely the problem of Rachilde’s belonging to one or more minorities.
