Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the understanding of the term gloss in Polish historical-linguistic studies; it also provides an attempt at defining the term. A review of relevant sources demonstrates that the term is not formally defined, but rather treated intuitively by individual scholars. The author points to six criteria which define a gloss, and postulates that the most important, definitional one is connected with the placement of glosses (displayed outside the main text).
