(How to Study the Polish Language of the Southern Borderland in the 17th and 18th Centuries? Methodological Issues in Historical Dialectology)
- Author(s):Katarzyna Sicińska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics
- Page Range:11-42
- No. of Pages:32
- Keywords:historical dialectology; philological method; retrospective method; quantitative method; language contact; historical-comparative linguistics; interference; linguistic archaism
- Summary/Abstract:The paper discusses methodological issues in historical dialectology. The author concentrates on Polish of the Southern Borderland in the 17th and 18th centuries and provides a comprehensive overview of relevant literature. The paper demonstrates that in studying the Polish language of that period and region it is necessary to apply complex methodology, which would take into account both the classical philological-retrospective method, as well as insights from language contact, comparative linguistics, sociolinguistics and quantitative linguistics.

- Author(s):Zdzisława Krążyńska, Tomasz Mika, Agnieszka Słoboda
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics
- Page Range:43-52
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:Old Polish syntax; syntactic change; historical processes in language; categorization; structurization; condensation of content; analytic tendencies; autonomization of language
- Summary/Abstract:The article briefly presents a new methodological proposal for the description of Old Polish syntax, based on new principles and forming different aims. Those aims are connected with identifying the most important trends in syntactic change and their interpretation. The article provides an overview of the theory more comprehensively advocated in the authors’ book Składnia średniowiecznej polszczyzny (The Old Polish Syntax), published in 2015.

- Keywords:gloss; interlinear gloss; marginal gloss; annotation; mediaeval texts; genetic multilayer; historical linguistics
- Summary/Abstract:The article is devoted to the understanding of the term gloss in Polish historical-linguistic studies; it also provides an attempt at defining the term. A review of relevant sources demonstrates that the term is not formally defined, but rather treated intuitively by individual scholars. The author points to six criteria which define a gloss, and postulates that the most important, definitional one is connected with the placement of glosses (displayed outside the main text).

(Corpus and Quantitative Methods in Historical Linguistics)
- Author(s):Rafał L. Górski
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics
- Page Range:65-81
- No. of Pages:17
- Keywords:corpus linguistics; historical linguistics; quantitative linguistics; corpora; grammaticalization
- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents the use of machine-readable corpora in historical linguistics, as well as methods elaborated for analyses of present-day language, which are widely adopted to the examination of diachronic processes. These methods enable a more thorough observation of the course and mechanisms which drive language changes. Abundance of data offered by the corpora allows for a wider use of the methods of quantitative linguistics. These in turn allow for identifying some cognitive motivations of diachronic processes as well as estimating the dynamics of the change.

(Investigating Evaluative Language in Judicial Discourse Using Corpus Linguistics Methodology: Possibilities and Limitations)
- Author(s):Stanisław Goźdź-Roszkowski
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics
- Page Range:83-102
- No. of Pages:20
- Keywords:evaluative language; judicial discourse; corpus linguistics
- Summary/Abstract:This paper sets out to explore the extent to which the subjective and context-sensitive phenomenon of evaluative language could be effectively analyzed in the institutional contexts of judicial discourse using corpus linguistics methods. After reviewing and comparing different conceptualizations of evaluative language (e.g. evaluation, stance, appraisal) and their corresponding methodological perspectives, this chapter presents and critiques a range of selected representative studies of evaluation in judicial opinions. The chapter ends with a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of using different corpus linguistics methods and suggestions for further research.

(Valuation as a Semantic Category)
- Author(s):Aleksander Kiklewicz
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics
- Page Range:103-140
- No. of Pages:38
- Keywords:semantics; valuation; value; semantic category; semantic determination
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article is a synthetic explication of value as a category of natural languages. The author treats evaluation in the processes of linguistic activity as a kind of semantic determination of the sentence (or text) elements. Using the notions of standard/norm, parameter of categorization, value scale, etc., the author proposes three types of norms (as the reference points in the evaluation processes): ideal, supposed and real. Other issues that are discussed in the article include the content of the evaluation frame and the structure of the category of value.

- Keywords:metaphor; myth; Cultural Linguistics; Peirce; Laudato Si'; poetics; cultural model
- Summary/Abstract:What do we mean when we say the Earth is our mother? Is it just a metaphor or an animistic myth? The ethnolinguist Jerzy Bartmiński suggests that one could resort here to Charles Peirce's conception of determinants: this is applied here to Pope Francis’ idea of earth as home in his encyclical Laudato Si’ . Peirce’s semiotic theory may in this way aid scholars associated with the framewok of Cultural Linguistics (Gary Palmer, Farzad Sharifian) in establishing the status of the “third way” beyond metaphor and myth.

(Panchrony, or Language as a Symbol of Human Experience)
- Author(s):Przemysław Łozowski
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theoretical Linguistics
- Page Range:165-177
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:language in time; diachrony vis-à-vis panchrony; system vis-à-vis symbol; structuralism vis-à-vis cognitivism; swiftly-adverbs
- Summary/Abstract:Steven Ullmann’s (1957) conception of panchrony is discussed in the context of the on-going polarization between structurally- and functionally-oriented linguistic paradigms. Panchrony is, thus, understood as “polychrony”, or similarities – in form and substance – in various languages owed to a specific set of favourable conditions and circumstances. Ullmann’s conception is related to a group of so-called swiftly-adverbs, which serves the purposes of exemplifying the difference between diachrony and panchrony. It is concluded that Ullmann’s panchrony is merely a kind of comparative synchrony, and that panchrony must be attempted not in terms of linguistic synchronic universals, but in terms of functional universals, such as cognitive and experiential patterns of behaviour.
