Summary/Abstract: In the 1960s, Colombia, like other Latin American countries pursuing thestrategy of industrialization through import substitution, decided to develop the carindustry on its territory based on the investments of transnational corporations. At thattime, however, it was a typically agricultural country, poorly developed, characterizednot only by low income per capita, but also by its extremely uneven distribution, whichsignifi cantly limited the demand for new cars. In the initial period it was an importantfactor limiting the development of the automotive industry in this country, however, with the improvement of the economic and political situation in recent decades, thedemand for new cars has increased. If political and economic stabilization continues,it can contribute to the further dynamic development of the automotive sector in thiscountry. Bearing in mind the above conditions, the aim of the article is to examine howthe economic development in Colombia infl uenced the automotive industry operatingin this country. In addition, it is analyzed if the growth of the demand for new cars hascontributed to the development of this sector in the country, or if it has had more to dowith the increase in imports of cars from abroad.
