Summary/Abstract: This volume presents different issues related to sustainable development shown within the context of globalization. A collection of selected texts discusses various theories of development, sustainability, and spatial, industrial and social policies. Most of the articles are devoted to the development of various Colombian regions. The idea of globalization brings us several images related to both professional and daily life, as well as, in general, social, political and spatial organization. The manifestations of globalization in each region and in each place are not the same and depend on a number of environmental, economic, social, political, cultural, etc. actors. Sustainable development within the context of globalization shows several faces and several alternatives of development paths within the local and regional context. This publication is the result of collaboration of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of University of Warsaw, Poland with the University of Manizales, Colombia.

The search to overcome these approachesrequires systematized data and indicators of livelihoods, resilience and well-being inrural areas, as an exit route to rural poverty, the socio-environmental imbalance, andfood insecurity, this to the extent that rural people, individually and collectively, requirecomprehensive contributions to their economic, social and cultural rights.

This fi eld of knowledge, but in other continents has been discussedbroadly in Latin America is emerging discussion. What aspects may refl ect this situation? The answer, perhaps, we can still be found in economics, is assumed with an Orthodoxperspective, considering a fi eld of knowledge that supplants another. This orthodoxyobfuscates the sight of integration with other sciences, in this case biology.Integrative synthesis of these fi elds of knowledge, resulting in the Bioeconomy, whichcan be considered as a new paradigm that responds to the challenges today requires sustainabledevelopment. In this sense, this course seeks to expand horizons of knowledgein the fi eld of orthodox economics, and social science.

- Summary/Abstract:Several countries around the world have questioned how to deal with climate change, andthe depletion of fossil fuels, through an international policy for sustainable development, that involves the clean energies generation. With this purpose, the Development Plan2005-2010 begins the regulation in Colombia of the biofuels production followed bymultiple regulatory provisions on renewable energy. As an alternative to fossil fuels, the sugarcane biofuels contribute to the conservationof the environment and they have widely documented benefi ts; however, from the pointof view the sustainable development of the communities, as in the Valle del Cauca case, could have negative social impacts such as land dispossession, increase in food prices, erosion of arable lands and lack of wáter; impacts that demand a paradigm of sustainabledevelopment that makes communities less vulnerable.

These are sets of programs and measures thatseek to keep the air quality within certain standards and prevent damages to health. This scientifi c review article, describes various measures implemented in some cities andregions of the world to manage the associated impacts. First of all, it was possible todemonstrate that the strategies are proposed according to the characteristics of the pollutionproblem that arises, and also, the need to jointly regulate and implement measures toreduce emissions generated by transportation and industries, using controls on emissionstandards, improving the quality of fuels, changes to facilitate the transition to more environmentallyfriendly fuels, development of instruments such as, decontamination plans, protocols of monitoring and for the attention of critical episodes, and actions aimed atimproving mobility urban in sectors such as transportation and industry, among others.

- Summary/Abstract:The problems related to the need to develop functions outside the agriculturalsector in rural areas are key from the point of view of the need to supply the countrysideand improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. Taking advantage of owned propertiesin a given region can develop tourism. The Peruvian rural sector despite having severalhistorical monuments and natural elements that attract tourists, bases its economic activityon agricultural activities. Such is the case of the Colca Valley where populations, asin all other Andean areas, are distributed in different ecological zones. In the mentionedvalley they are found above 3300 m above sea level.Tourism in the theory and practice of planning the development of the fi eld is consideredone of the important factors of economic growth; many times without detailed knowledgeof both local values about tourism and the degree of social and natural vulnerabilityunder the pressure of this activity. Assessing rural tourism as an element of the multifunctionalsustainable development of the countryside is not so easy, as the analysis ofthe Colca Valley case has shown.

- Summary/Abstract:In the 1960s, Colombia, like other Latin American countries pursuing thestrategy of industrialization through import substitution, decided to develop the carindustry on its territory based on the investments of transnational corporations. At thattime, however, it was a typically agricultural country, poorly developed, characterizednot only by low income per capita, but also by its extremely uneven distribution, whichsignifi cantly limited the demand for new cars. In the initial period it was an importantfactor limiting the development of the automotive industry in this country, however, with the improvement of the economic and political situation in recent decades, thedemand for new cars has increased. If political and economic stabilization continues,it can contribute to the further dynamic development of the automotive sector in thiscountry. Bearing in mind the above conditions, the aim of the article is to examine howthe economic development in Colombia infl uenced the automotive industry operatingin this country. In addition, it is analyzed if the growth of the demand for new cars hascontributed to the development of this sector in the country, or if it has had more to dowith the increase in imports of cars from abroad.

The iSPS imitate ecological systems, making the unidirectional fl ow of energy more complex, favoring the movement of matterthrough biogeochemical cycles and increasing ecological relationships. In the SSPi theenrichment of the composition (number of species), structure (increase in strata) andfunction (enrichment of ecological relationships), protects surface and ground watersources, favors the maintenance of relative humidity, stabilizes the daily temperaturepeaks, It protects from torrential rains and creates microclimates with associated microhabitatsthat allow the arrival of new species increasing local diversity. In addition, theyfavor root exploration of soil horizons, reducing the risk of erosion, increasing percolationprocesses and maintaining humidity and improving abiotic conditions for edaphicpopulations. The SSPi contribute to the mitigation of climate change, by reducing theproduction of GHG greenhouse gases and by increasing the CO2 capture by the plantcommunity; and, favors the adaptation of human populations to climate change, protectingecosystems, favoring the sustainable management of ecosystems and increasingeconomic productivity.

- Summary/Abstract:From the historical inventory of landslides and climatological records of theMatecaña Airport Meteorological Station and the Treatment Plant Station (Empresa Aguasy Aguas de Pereira), it was possible to establish the relationship between the behaviorof rainfall and the susceptibility of occurrence of Landslides in the urban and suburbanperimeters of the municipality of Pereira, during the period 1964–2000. The investigativeexercise was supported in the systematization, evaluation and georeferencing of 348landslides associated with the occurrence of rains in the study region, allowing to establishthe relationship between previous rains as detonating agent of landslides. Throughthe investigation, it was possible to determine for the municipality of Pereira cumulativerainfall thresholds of 158 mm, 294 mm, 418 mm and 530 mm respectively for the areaof infl uence of the Matecaña Airport station, for periods of 15, 30, 45 and 60 days. Inthe same way, and for the same intervals, values of 171 mm, 299 mm, 421 mm and 552mm were obtained for the area of infl uence of the Treatment Plant station. It was alsopossible to estimate that the highest number of landslides (177 events) was associatedwith cumulative rainfall thresholds for the 15-day interval (158 mm), according to theresults of the present investigation.
