Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the Latin American perception of development. This text isa refl ection on the difference between the Western and Creole / Latin American conceptsof development as well as the discourse of Buen Vivir and its use in the discussion onsustainable development. These considerations are divided into three parts. The fi rst partanalyzes the imposition of European understanding of development on Latin America,as well as the evolution of the Western development discourse. The second one depictsthe Latin American contribution to thinking about development. The third part presentsan analysis of the discourse on “Good life”. The author examines its basic assumptionsand compares it with the concept of sustainable development. In conclusion, the authorhighlights the importance of the concept of Buen Vivir in reviving the critical approachin the fi eld of sustainable development as well as the need of defi ning its shape andchecking its applicability in response to the contemporary crisis.
