Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses three means of expressing presumption in Bulgarian: lexical (words whose lexical semantics expresses presumption), grammatical (verbal forms of the so-called presumptive), and syntactic (constructions with a presumptive meaning). Bulgarian is one of the few Indo-European languages with a (partial) grammaticalisation of presumptive forms, but they remain peripheral for the language system. This fact can be explained with the domination of the lexical means, which have less usage restrictions.
