Summary/Abstract: The article summarizes information about creoles as a particular form of contact languages and examines them as illustrating a kind of both adaptation and domination relationship between two language varieties, resulting from the process of creolization. Such kind of relationship is sometimes reversed and a process of decreolization can follow implying shift from more basilectal to more acrolectal varieties of the contact language (or from creole to patois). The article focuses on creoles that are French-based and attempts to reveal the characteristics that distinguish them from the other creoles. Comments on the nature of these contact languages are complemented with observations on their status, especially in the domain of education, for the different administrative units of overseas France (départements et régions d’outre-mer, collectivités d’outre-mer) and some former French colonies (Haiti, Louisiana in the USA, Mauritius and Seychelles).
