Summary/Abstract: In the last few decades cognitive and psycholinguistic theories have taken solid ground in the explanation of the process of second language acquisition (SLA), having admitted the key role of the social environment and different social factors, affecting this process. In a study, based on empirical data collected by over 100 participants, the researcher has found evidence in support of certain cognitive linguistic and socio-cultural theories, which claim that L2 acquisition is usage-based and it depends on factors such as social interaction, extensive exposure to L1 in a country where it is used as native, in which L2 learners can be exposed to linguistic models which they can imitate, extend, and generalise, using their cognitive abilities. Interest in L1 culture and environment can also significantly motivate and facilitate L2 acquisition. This, in its turn, could lead to a higher attainment of proficiency in the target language, as this research found.
