Summary/Abstract: In the era of globalization and development of the knowledge-based economy, the importance of the key competencies enabling flexible movement in the competitive labor market is steadily increasing. These competencies are a special kind of capital, which, while been improved, facilitates meeting challenges posed by the changing social and economic reality. It is in this article that on the basis of international studies, results of teaching exact and natural science were analyzed and selected activities taken in the European Union for teaching these subjects were presented. Then the possibilities to develop key competencies of pupils of upper secondary schools in these subjects were discussed on the example of the project entitled. "Science without Borders".
