Summary/Abstract: Starting from several remarks on the principle of nationalities, the aim of this paper is to present a brief analysis of the historical documents that are relevant for the way in which the preparation and accomplishment of the 1918 Great Union was perceived by the American diplomatic representatives and politicians. The United States actively supported the national liberation movement of the oppressed nations from the collapsing empires and, in 1918, represented one of the great powers supporting the political cause of unification of all Romanians in a single, unitary state.
