Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the role that civil society had with the army in the formation of the Romanian National Unitary State. In the late 1918`s and early 1919`s, the new Romanian state, included many education systems borrowed from European countries. Most intellectuals at that time, together with representatives of political parties, said that all these educational systems need to be unified and centralized, the Minister of Public Instruction Constantin Angelescu affirmed his conviction that educational systems had to be unified to form and strengthen the Romanian national consciousness. The presence of several foreign educational systems, either inherited from Austria-Hungary or from Russia, was a barrier on the way of affirming the national identity of the Romanians in the new provinces annexed to the Romanian State in the eyes of civil society representatives. Education, science and culture have seen an unprecedented development in interwar Romania, after the Great Union.
