Summary/Abstract: In 2017, Romania ranks 26th out of 28 in the European Union(UE) according to the Transparency International index of corruption (ICP). The best in this respect are countries like - Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland, and the worst - the Balkan and Caucasian states and former soviet countries. Undoubtedly, corruption is a real and current problem for our society. But, to what extent can it be considered a security issue? This question originates in the presence of corruption as a problem addressed within the National Defence Strategy of the Country, where it is presented as vulnerability. The answer to the above question is a complex one, and this paperwork proposes a study on corruption as a social phenomenon and analyses the impact that corruption can have on national security. The dissertation seeks to underline the impact on the very existence of the Romanian modern state and subsequently to address the phenomenon as a vulnerability to national security. Criteria analysis refers to an extended security model developed by Barry Buzan and Ole Weaver in the Copenhagen School, where security is addressed at several levels: military, political, societal, economic, environmental, etc.
