Summary/Abstract: Biographical transformation seems to be one of the most important concepts in contemporary pedagogy, not only in the area of social rehabilitation or youth work but also in gerontology. An impression is to be made that “techniques of the self”, genealogically corresponding to the ancient notion of the care of the self (epimeleia heautou / ἐπιμέλεια ἑαυτοῦ), are being experience a kind of renaissance, influencing professional action of educators, but also educationalizing public discourse. Biographical (narrative) epistemological perspective is an important condition of the process, it grounds not only scientific research, but also penetrates in a popular form into the mass media defining the boundaries of what is real or worth to be experienced. Unfortunately, the process of popularizing biographical change is not accompanied by adequate critical study while the process may be one of the sophisticated mechanisms of power of freedom. As a result, the virtual recognition of the individuals’ right to constructing their own biographical projects and the invitation to inventing (and transforming) their selves can be interpreted as a mass colonization of the biography in the broader social plan.
