Summary/Abstract: The matters under consideration in volume VI of the Biography and Biography Research series, edited by Elżbieta Dubas and Anna Gutowska, are two leading issues that can be examined on the basis of biographical research. One of them is the stability and/or variability in biography, the other – biographical turning points. Both issues of reflection and biographical research are combined and interlock. The question of stability and variability is tackled in four chapters in this volume: by Agnieszka Zalewska-Meler, where the chapter is an attempt to grasp both common and unusual elements of sportsmen biographies; by Agnieszka Kowalska, indicating how educational, activating and integrated activities influenced individual lives of the homeless; by Tomasz Hauz, referring in his chapter to changes that take place in the lives of HIV-positive people; and by Aneta Tejchman, analysing the biography of Jan Ekier, an outstanding Polish artist, in search of a permanent feature of his scientific and artistic activity. The issue of biographical turning points is explored by the authors of the following seven chapters in this monography: Dorota Sieroń-Galusek raises the issue concerning the so-called biographic method/biographism in the context of selected academic works in the field of humanities and social sciences; Monika Chmielecka paints the picture of great biographical turning points in the light of the theory of transformative learning; Kamila Lasocińska connects the issue of biographical turning points with creativity, transgression, self-creation and adult creativity; Renata Brzezińska shows critical events of epiphanic nature in professional senior biographies; Marta Bożewicz presents the break-through experiences in the biographies of people having vocation for priesthood; Barbara Toroń-Fórmanek shows the relationship between an identity of a person in a penitentiary institution and their life course before going to prison; Małgorzata Lis proposes the concept of the four components (dynamisms) of upbringing according to Stefan Kunowski to be used for the research into biographical turning points in the history of upbringing. The volume concludes with three texts that refer to leading reflections on biographies and their research. Mariusz Granosik writes about a biographical transformation as one of the most important categories of contemporary pedagogy. Anna Walulik and Celina Kisiel-Dorohnicka analyse the anthropological ideas by Paul Ricoeur on the categories of stability and variability, and the identity and otherness. The publication ends with the text by Olga Czerniawska presenting chosen dilemmas of autobiography writing.

- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of the present text was to capture common and untypical elements of sports biographies that were part of the time of interest and later involvement in competitive sport. On the basis of individual sports history, they tried to determine their regularity, recognize the problems associated with building an authentic and very often independent vision of themselves in the field of physical culture. The analysis of biographical texts (in accordance with the principles of hermeneutic interpretation) was accompanied by a graphical presentation of the process of events and experiences that have a decisive influence on the understanding of the philosophy accompanying the building and development of sports careers.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents a part of the wider study concerning changes in subjects’ lives caused by being diagnosed with HIV. The diagnosis is treated by the author as a special kind of turning points categorized as so – called critical life events. People who have to cope with such events are forced to reorganize their lives and create new external and internal balance. Critical life events stop subjects’ previous activities and lead to unavoidable changes. The results show that these changes, when it comes to being infected with HIV, take place in all significant areas of people’s lives. The research was carried out taking advantage of a qualitative method with the use of a biographical-narrative interview. This strategy was combined with the quantitative analysis of the collected data. The research sample consisted of 30 people infected with HIV.

- Summary/Abstract:The life of every human being is an endless collection of facts, information, events, thoughts, feelings, dreams and experiences. The assumption that a biography, trying to give the comprehensive description of a human life, i.e. from the moment of birth until death, is going to reveal the whole truth about a person, is probably far-fetched at best. How many questions would need to be asked and how many would need to be answered in order to present a person from a multitude of perspectives? How many problems would need to be analysed, how many puzzles would need an explanation, how many documents would need to be found? Sometimes we undertake this effort, often as a result of the great impact of a given individual’s achievements on a society, and his or her uniqueness as a human being. The primary objective of this article is to analyse the biography of Jan Ekier, one of the most remarkable Polish artists of the twentieth and early twenty-first century in terms of some universal characteristics of his academic and artistic activity. Is there a single factor that would meet the requirement of universality in a life so rich and multithreaded that we could identify? Its discovery would be fascinating because of the artist’s life which lasted for over a hundred years, filled with work and a great number of achievements. That is why, it is worth looking at his life from this perspective.

Jack Mezirow tried to systemize deep changes which are a part of human’s life in his transformative learning theory. In that case, a breakthrough is a perspective transformation and making decisions based on critical reflection on and of individual assumptions, which leads to modifications in everyday behaviour. - Summary/Abstract:In this article I take a reflection on the meaning of life breakthroughs in adult life in the context of discovering and becoming aware by a person of the new development opportunities. Particular importance is attached to the notion of creativity analyzed in relation to the possibility for adults to explore new directions of fulfillment during their mid-adulthood. - Summary/Abstract:Discovering one’s self as a one having a vocation to priesthood is usually connected with a breakthrough experience – it may be small or global, may be one or many. Sometimes it manifests in the difficulty of describing an own experience, and on other occasions it is so vivid that it is forever engraved in the memory, with all of its details. Because it touches upon the spiritual life of an individual and connects with transcendence, it is a personal and intimate experience. In some biographies, a radical turning point is evident, and in others a long-lasting conversion of which the most evident display is adopting the perspective of a new group. The article describe four types of biographies of people having a vocation to priesthood, and including various breakthrough experiences. It is the result of research conducted with seminary students and priests, using a method of biographical interviews analyzed according to the concept by Fritz Schütze.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of rehabilitation activities is to lead a person to a condition of adequate adaptation to standards of social life, develop skills which enable socialization and participation in culture and as a result to develop their own identity. Unfortunately, the theory does not coincide with practice which is shown in the author’s research. The article presents the connection between the human’s identity and his life before his imprisonment. The author associates the process of developing the identity with the lifestyle according to Walter’s conception and then, basing on her own studies, the author shows that the rehabilitation in the Polish prison system does not have a good influence on the convict’s reshaping process. It is believed that the cause of that is the biography. The author can see the connection between the developing of the criminal identity with the influence of school, peer group and criminal group. Moreover, the author pays special attention to the need to use creative methods of rehabilitation which support the development of the proper identity.

- Summary/Abstract:Biographical transformation seems to be one of the most important concepts in contemporary pedagogy, not only in the area of social rehabilitation or youth work but also in gerontology. An impression is to be made that “techniques of the self”, genealogically corresponding to the ancient notion of the care of the self (epimeleia heautou / ἐπιμέλεια ἑαυτοῦ), are being experience a kind of renaissance, influencing professional action of educators, but also educationalizing public discourse. Biographical (narrative) epistemological perspective is an important condition of the process, it grounds not only scientific research, but also penetrates in a popular form into the mass media defining the boundaries of what is real or worth to be experienced. Unfortunately, the process of popularizing biographical change is not accompanied by adequate critical study while the process may be one of the sophisticated mechanisms of power of freedom. As a result, the virtual recognition of the individuals’ right to constructing their own biographical projects and the invitation to inventing (and transforming) their selves can be interpreted as a mass colonization of the biography in the broader social plan.

- Summary/Abstract:The article addresses the problem of the temporal dimension of human existence and its importance for biographical research. The point of departure is the understanding of human fate in terms of constancy and change, as well as identity and difference (of another human being), outlined by the anthropological thought of Paul Ricoeur. In the light of the above philosophy, an exemplary narration is analyzed and interpreted – it is autobiography of Josef Ströder, a German doctor who was accused during World War II of having friendship with Poles. Ricoeur’s recognition of the personal identity as a narrative identity (and closely related ethical identity), as well as analysis of the selected narration, let us conclude that the narration of one’s own life is not a neutral description. This conclusion has clear pedagogical implications – it suggests the need to create a human (especially adult) conditions and opportunities for a reflective story about one’s own life.
