Summary/Abstract: : The aim of this paper is to take a closer look at the impact of the 1990s on the current activity of the Romanian security sector. The study states that, after the downfall of Communism, this field passed through a five-dimensional process of transformation - the change in external priorities and strategic options; a new definition of threats; mutations in the network of institutions in charge of security; a new basis for the relation to the citizens; changes in day by day security processes. After considering, along those lines, both the successes of the period and some its shortcomings or unsolved problems, the paper shows that the transformation of the security sector did not end by cosmeticizing the previous realities, but by generating a constitutive effect in this field and by laying new foundations for how Romania currently understands and achieves its security.
